Microsoft Edge 132 Beta Release: Key Features and Improvements

Microsoft has unveiled the latest version of Edge (132) for Insiders within the Beta Channel, incorporating numerous enhancements and new functionalities. This release encompasses all updates made in the Dev Channel over the last three weeks, notably introducing the recently announced Microsoft Edge Game Assist, which surprisingly isn’t highlighted in the official release notes.

What’s New in Edge 132?

The following features and improvements have been included in the latest Edge update:

Enhanced Intune Policy Management: Administrators can now implement Intune policies through the Microsoft Edge management service, complementing existing cloud policies. This integration enables streamlined deployment of browser settings from a unified interface, bolstering user security and ensuring a coherent browser experience. Furthermore, a new policy creation wizard simplifies the process, guiding users through with a step-by-step approach. Note: This feature is currently available in public preview and requires opting into targeted release via the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Version Monitoring Streamlined: The Edge management service provides a comprehensive view of all Edge instances in use, alongside their update statuses and potential actions. For those running outdated versions, administrators can efficiently schedule updates or alert users to update their browsers, minimizing workflow disruptions. Note: This experience is also in public preview under the targeted release option in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Shopping Product Tracking: Users can easily monitor product prices with a new feature visible in the Edge Address Bar on product detail pages. The system allows customers to watch price fluctuations and receive notifications for price drops to enhance savings. Administrators hold the reins over the Shopping feature’s availability via the EdgeShoppingAssistantEnabled policy. Note: This feature is being gradually rolled out, so availability may vary.

New Sync Category for Feature Usage: Edge Sync has expanded its capabilities with the introduction of a new category dedicated to Feature Usage data. This enhancement allows users to synchronize their interactions with Edge features across all devices. Note: Similar to other features, this rollout is being controlled, and users may need to check for availability as it progresses.

Updated Password Manager Policy: The new DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled policy dictates the passwords management capabilities of Edge. Specifically, this setting allows the deletion of undecryptable passwords from the database. While necessary for restoring the full use of the password manager, this action may lead to unrecoverable data loss.

Deprecation of Promotional Tabs Policy: Microsoft Edge version 132 marks the end for the PromotionalTabsEnabled policy, with plans to phase it out in future releases. Instead, administrators can now opt for the ShowRecommendationsEnabled policy, offering a more streamlined experience.

Improved XFA PDF Support for Enterprises: Enterprise users can now access XFA PDFs within Microsoft Edge by utilizing IE Mode, enabled through specific policies. This upgrade will be integrated into the new PDF viewer within Edge, facilitating better document handling for business environments.
