Microsoft Authenticator: Major Changes on the Horizon
Microsoft has launched its Authenticator app, a versatile tool designed to enhance security through two-factor authentication, password management, and secure payment data storage. However, recent news reveals a significant change coming for users of the app that may diminish its overall utility.
Upcoming Feature Removals
In a detailed support document, Microsoft announced plans to phase out several of the Authenticator’s key functionalities. The core of the update indicates a shift in focus toward driving users to its Edge browser. Starting in June 2025, users will no longer have the ability to save new passwords directly in the Authenticator app.
Timeline of Changes
- June 2025: New password-saving capabilities will be discontinued.
- July 2025: The app will cease to auto-fill passwords for websites and applications, and it will delete stored payment information.
- August 2025: All previously saved and generated passwords will be permanently removed.
The Rationale Behind the Shift
According to Microsoft, this transition aims to “streamline autofill so you can use saved passwords easily across devices.”The company’s intention appears to be an effort to cultivate a more significant user base for Edge, which has struggled with its market share amidst fierce competition.
Still a Handy Tool, but with Limitations
Despite these changes, Microsoft Authenticator remains viable for generating two-factor authentication codes and storing passkeys. However, users may find the app significantly less valuable as it nudges them toward adopting Edge or transitioning to alternative password management solutions.
Options for Users
As users adapt to these changes, Microsoft suggests two primary paths: embrace Edge as the “AI browser”that offers autofill capabilities for applications on both Android and iOS devices, or export all your data from Authenticator to another password manager. It’s crucial for users to complete the export before August 1, 2025, as any data not backed up will be automatically deleted thereafter.
