Microsoft Discontinues Its Movie and TV Store

Microsoft Shuts Down Movie and TV Store

In a significant shift for digital entertainment, Microsoft has announced that it will no longer offer movies and TV shows for sale across its platforms. This decision affects purchases made through Microsoft.com, as well as the Microsoft Store on Windows and Xbox applications.

Official Statement from Microsoft

In a newly published support document, Microsoft clearly outlines this change:

Important: Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, you can continue to access your purchased content in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows device.

Accessing Existing Content

Fortunately, users who have previously purchased content will still have access to it. The Movies & TV app on both Windows PCs and Xbox consoles allows playback of owned titles. While there currently isn’t an option to transfer purchased content to other platforms, U. S.customers can utilize the Movies Anywhere program to transfer select movies and shows across compatible services.

No Refunds for Purchases

For those concerned about returning purchased content, Microsoft has clarified that refunds for movie purchases will not be provided. According to the company’s terms of sale, recent purchases will remain non-refundable. However, given that users can still enjoy their previously acquired content, the response to this closing may be muted.

The End of Microsoft’s Streaming Ventures

With the dismantling of its Movies and TV store, Microsoft has officially exited the streaming market. This follows a similar decision eight years ago when the company phased out its Groove Music service, which was formerly known as Xbox Music. As entertainment options become more fragmented, Microsoft encourages users to turn to popular third-party platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and Netflix for streaming needs.
