Microsoft Defender Adds Unsecure Wi-Fi Detection for Individuals in More Countries
In 2023, Microsoft initially introduced enhanced privacy protection capabilities through Microsoft Defender for individuals. Earlier this year, these features were extended to users in the UK and made accessible on mobile platforms, including iOS and Android. Today, Microsoft has announced yet another significant expansion of the privacy protection features within Microsoft Defender for individuals.
Now, Microsoft Defender automatically identifies and alerts users about insecure Wi-Fi connections across Android, iOS, and Windows devices, with a macOS update on the horizon. When your device connects to a less secure Wi-Fi hotspot, Defender will send a notification and enable users to disconnect with just a single click. Moreover, Microsoft is planning to automatically activate a VPN when users connect to public Wi-Fi networks in future software updates.
The privacy protection feature (VPN) of Microsoft Defender is currently available on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS platforms within the US, UK, Germany, and Canada. Microsoft also intends to introduce privacy protection in ten additional countries across Europe, Asia, and Latin America shortly. When this privacy protection feature is activated, your internet traffic is encrypted, and your IP address remains concealed. At present, Microsoft provides a monthly data limit of 50GB (per user) for secure and anonymous web browsing using this feature. It’s essential to note that certain popular streaming services will not function through this VPN:
- Video: YouTube, TikTok, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime
- Social: Facebook video, Instagram, Snapchat
- Music: Spotify, YouTube Music
- Messaging: WhatsApp
You can download the Microsoft Defender application from the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Microsoft Store. To utilize these features, users must sign in using a personal Microsoft account (like @gmail, @outlook, etc.) that is linked to a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.
With the growth of privacy protection features and the anticipated auto-VPN capability, users can look forward to a safer and more private online browsing experience.
