Microsoft Launches “Hey Copilot”Voice Activation Feature for Windows 11
Following a series of teasers on X, Microsoft has made a significant announcement regarding voice activation with the introduction of the “Hey Copilot”command for the Copilot app in Windows 11. This new feature allows users to effortlessly activate Copilot by simply speaking the wake phrase, reminiscent of the earlier Cortana and Windows Phone voice features.
Once activated by saying “Hey Copilot, ”users will hear an audible chime, accompanied by a small microphone icon appearing at the bottom of their screen. With this setup, users can initiate conversations with Copilot, making inquiries or requests. The interaction is just as seamless—users can conclude their session by saying “goodbye, ”after which Copilot will deactivate automatically following a brief period of inactivity, again signaled by a chime.
Availability and Requirements
The “Hey Copilot”voice activation feature is now available to all Windows 11 users. Initially, this feature was accessible to insiders starting in May. To utilize this function, users only need a microphone and an active internet connection to engage with Copilot effectively.
Introducing Copilot Vision
In addition to the voice activation capabilities, Microsoft is also rolling out Copilot Vision across all markets where Copilot operates. This new feature allows users to share their desktop or specific applications with Copilot, empowering it to analyze content, provide valuable insights, and assist with queries. Users can also leverage the Highlights feature, which demonstrates how to perform specific tasks. Notably, when used with Microsoft Office applications, Copilot can analyze beyond just the visible slides of a presentation, providing comprehensive feedback on the entire project.
New Text Interaction Capabilities
Microsoft is developing an innovative “Text-in Text-out”feature that will enable users to interact with Copilot through text during Vision sessions. One practical application includes instructing Copilot to extract HEX codes from vibrant colors within a designated folder.

Activation and Opt-In Settings
It’s important to note that voice activation within the Copilot app is turned off by default, requiring users to opt in. To enable this feature, navigate to the Copilot settings and toggle on the “Listen for ‘Hey, Copilot’ to start a conversation”option.
