Significant Updates in Microsoft Edge 137 Beta
Microsoft is rolling out major changes with the release of Edge version 137, now available on the Beta Channel. This update, numbered 137.0.3296.16, introduces an array of modifications, including the removal of certain features, while also enhancing others.
What’s Being Phased Out?
According to Microsoft, the following features are being deprecated:
- Removal of some existing Microsoft Edge features.
- Wallet Features Transition: Microsoft is discontinuing the Wallet feature to create a more streamlined experience. In this latest version, the Wallet option within Settings has been eliminated, giving way to a more comprehensive section dedicated to managing Passwords, Personal Information, and Payment functionalities. Additionally, a refreshed design for personal information management is being introduced in the Edge Settings. Keep in mind that this is part of a controlled rollout, so it may not be immediately available to all users.
New Features and Enhancements
Despite the removals, Edge 137 also introduces a range of exciting updates, particularly for multimedia experiences:
- Enhanced Picture-in-Picture Mode: The updated version enhances the picture-in-picture functionality, allowing users to play, pause, rewind, and fast-forward videos directly within the pop-up window. This makes it easier to enjoy video content while multitasking across other tasks on the screen. To activate this feature, simply click the picture-in-picture icon on any video.
Additional Improvements in Edge
Further advances in version 137 include:
- Contextual Capabilities in Microsoft Copilot: New contextual queries and page summarization capabilities have been added to the Work tab within Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365. Users can ask intelligent questions, such as “summarize this page, ” with contextual prompt suggestions available to facilitate relevant inquiries regarding the current web content. Note that a Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required to utilize this feature, and administrators can control its availability via the EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext policy.
- Mutation Events Policy Update: With the removal of support for mutation events in version 127, the associated MutationEventsEnabled policy is now obsolete in version 137. Developers can utilize the MutationObserver API instead.
- Integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat with Find on Page: Microsoft Edge for Business is set to enhance the Find on Page (CTRL+F) function with Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, aimed at helping users discover pertinent content more efficiently.
- Expanded Language Support for PDF Text Features: The PDF reader within Edge will now support the addition of text in various non-English languages, greatly enhancing the usability of documents in diverse linguistic contexts.
