Microsoft Clarifies Copilot is Not Just for Entertainment, After Internal Document Advises Caution with AI

Microsoft has recently clarified, in communication with Windows Latest, that Copilot is designed for a variety of applications beyond mere entertainment. This statement comes in response to concerns raised by users regarding contradictory claims found in a terms-of-use page.

In the aforementioned document, Microsoft cautioned that Copilot is not infallible and specifically categorized its functionality as intended for entertainment purposes. Furthermore, the company stressed that users should not depend on Copilot for critical tasks, advising them to engage with the tool “at your own risk.” While such caution is typical in AI product disclaimers, the assertion that Copilot is solely for “entertainment purposes” raises eyebrows, particularly in a legal context.

This point ignited discussions on Reddit, where users noted the peculiar language in the terms of use document that remains accessible on Microsoft’s website. For those who prefer not to sift through lengthy text, a screenshot of the “Important Disclosures and Warnings” section emphasizes that Copilot is indeed described as an entertainment tool.

“It can make mistakes, and it may not work as intended. Don’t rely on Copilot for important advice. Use Copilot at your own risk, ” the company cautioned.

In defense of its product, Microsoft insisted that Copilot extends its capabilities to a broader spectrum of use cases beyond entertainment, attributing the outdated phrasing to its origins when Copilot was primarily a feature of Bing, branded as Bing Chat.

The company stated, “The ‘entertainment purposes’ phrasing is legacy language from when Copilot originally launched as a search companion service in Bing. As the product has evolved, that language is no longer reflective of how Copilot is used today and will be altered with our next update, ” according to their correspondence with Windows Latest.

Initially, when Copilot gained attention as a viral tool associated with Bing Chat during the early days of large language models, Microsoft encouraged users to view it as an entertainment service. However, the company now asserts that this perception has changed significantly.

Copilot has integrated productivity-enhancing features, allowing users to transform documents into dynamic presentations, generate podcasts from extensive text, and even administer functions within Windows 11.
