Microsoft announces Windows 11 24H2 release date for all PCs: Is your PC compatible? [Update]
Earlier this month, a senior official at Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 version 24H2 is not yet available for all eligible systems. While this news may be disheartening for enthusiasts, the positive aspect is that the next feature update is expected to arrive soon.
In a recent blog post regarding the enhanced data protection for Copilot, Microsoft disclosed the release timeline for Windows 11 version 24H2, the upcoming annual feature update for Windows 11.
Microsoft stated:
The transition to the Microsoft 365 app as the main interface for Microsoft Copilot will coincide with the annual Windows 11 feature update release. Changes will begin rolling out to managed PCs with the optional non-security preview release on September 24, 2024, followed by the monthly security update on October 8 for all supported versions of Windows 11. These updates will also reach Windows 10 PCs the subsequent month.
Therefore, it appears Windows 11 version 24H2 will be available as a preview by the end of the month as a C-release, with the official general availability for all compatible systems set for October 8, 2024, coinciding with the monthly Patch Tuesday.
It is important to note that Windows 11 24H2 is already accessible for Copilot+ devices. The October 2024 Patch Tuesday will deliver it to the remaining compatible systems. For reference, Copilot+ PCs (both Arm64 and AMD64) must meet a minimum requirement of 40 NPU TOPS.
If you are curious about your PC’s compatibility with version 24H2, Microsoft has indicated that the system requirements will not change; however, devices with very old processors will no longer be able to circumvent these requirements.
The October 8, 2024, Patch Tuesday update will also introduce another significant modification. The company announced recently that Quality Updates will now be implemented during the initial provisioning (OOBE) for Intune-managed devices.
In addition to these updates, Microsoft has established a method to deliver cumulative updates via checkpoints. However, this approach is currently facing issues, leading to MSU install failures.
Update, September 19, 2024, 20:45 GMT: Microsoft has now retracted the release date for Windows 11 version 24H2 General Availability and may indicate a potential delay.
