Microsoft announces release dates for Outlook and Teams Copilot Chat

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat: New Features and Rollout Schedule

In December of last year, Microsoft announced significant updates for its Microsoft 365 app interface and its intelligent assistant, previously known as Copilot. The company officially rebranded it to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and has since been rolling out new features to enhance user experience.

Rollout Roadmap for Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat

Recently, via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, Microsoft unveiled the timeline for the general availability of the Copilot Chat feature within Outlook and Teams. This rollout will extend through late January to most of February 2025, providing users with plenty of time to adapt to these changes.

General Availability (Worldwide): The Microsoft Copilot app will be available for installation and pinning in Teams and Outlook starting in late January 2025 (moved from mid-January), expected to be fully rolled out by late February 2025 (originally planned for late January).

General Availability (Worldwide): The Microsoft 365 Copilot app will be automatically pinned in the Teams left rail starting late January 2025, with a completion expected by the end of February 2025.

The pinned app on Teams Mobile will be visible in the top header, while Outlook Mobile users will see Copilot appear in the tab bar from mid-February 2025.

Accessing Copilot Features

According to the latest updates, users with an Entra account can expect access to Microsoft Copilot in both Teams and Outlook by mid-January 2025. When pinned, these users will quickly access the Copilot app from the left navigation pane.

On Teams Mobile, the pinned app will be positioned prominently in the top header. The Microsoft Copilot app will also become accessible via the Store for users wishing to add it independently, governed by the current admin settings. For Outlook Mobile, the roll-out of Copilot functionality is set to commence in February.

Moreover, users holding a Microsoft 365 Copilot license will find the Copilot automatically pinned in their Teams left rail, alongside the Copilot chat integrated in the Teams Chat pane.

Admin Controls for Copilot Features

Microsoft has specified how IT and system administrators can manage the new Copilot features within Outlook and Teams. This includes the ability to pin or unpin the app as desired, along with options to block or remove access.

Administrators can determine whether Microsoft Copilot remains pinned in Teams and Outlook using predefined controls shared earlier. This setup permits them to pin the Microsoft Copilot app in Teams by modifying app Setup policies.

Through this control system, admins can opt to pin, or not pin, Copilot for users. If they opt against pinning, users will still receive notifications prompting them to make a decision regarding the app. If no action is taken, the app remains unpinned but users will be informed of their autonomy to pin it independently.

End users also retain the ability to unpin Copilot in both Outlook and Teams, provided that user pinning is permitted in the app policies.

Access to Copilot can currently be revoked via the Microsoft 365 app and the copilot.cloud.microsoft platform, maintaining consistent governance during the rollout of new features in Outlook and Teams.

Additionally, admins will be able to block or permit the Copilot app from appearing within the Microsoft 365 app, Outlook, and copilot.cloud.microsoft through the Microsoft 365 admin center (MAC), similar to how other applications are managed today.
