Microsoft Announces PowerShell 7.5 RC1 Release, General Availability Expected in January

Microsoft Unveils PowerShell 7.5 Release Candidate

Microsoft has officially launched the first release candidate of PowerShell 7.5, a notable milestone for developers and system administrators. Even though this version is not yet ready for general availability, the company has categorized it as a “go-live” release, signifying that it is fully supported for production use.

Key Features of PowerShell 7.5

PowerShell 7.5 is built on the robust. NET 9 framework and will enjoy a support lifespan of 18 months as part of Microsoft’s standard support policy. It’s important to note that support for PowerShell 7.2 ended on November 8, 2024, while the Long-Term Servicing (LTS) release version 7.4 is available and will be supported until November 2026.

What’s New in PowerShell 7.5?

This release introduces several enhancements and features designed to improve user experience and functionality:

  • Updated PSReadLine: The PSReadLine module has been upgraded to version 2.3.6.
  • New Cmdlets: Introducing the new cmdlets ConvertTo-CliXml and ConvertFrom-CliXml (Thanks to @ArmaanMcleod!).

Additionally, several experimental features have been promoted to official features in this release:

Looking Ahead: General Availability

The general availability of PowerShell 7.5 is anticipated in January 2025. Current users who have previously installed the PowerShell 7.5 preview version and opted for Microsoft Update will automatically receive the update to version 7.5.0-rc.1.
