Microsoft Announces Automatic Download of Windows 11 25H2 for Selected PCs Using Machine Learning Technology

On September 30, Microsoft introduced Windows 11 25H2 as an “enablement package, ”signifying a minor update that does not present any striking changes to users. The company has embarked on a phased rollout, and we are nearing the penultimate stage of this process. Beginning now, Windows 11 25H2 will start to automatically download on most eligible unmanaged PCs.

Microsoft has discreetly updated its release documentation to clarify some key points. Firstly, users can now find Windows 11 version 25H2 available for ‘Download & Install’ upon activating the “Get the latest updates…” feature.

Previously, even with the toggle on, users were unable to see this year’s update. Now, whether you are operating on Windows 10 or version 23H2, an installation prompt for version 25H2 will be displayed.

This discovery has been confirmed by Microsoft, which also noted that it will upgrade out-of-support 23H2 PCs to 25H2. Furthermore, the 25H2 update is now associated with the toggle feature.

Additionally, another less noticeable update in Microsoft’s documentation reveals that the company has begun employing a “machine-learning” based method for automatically upgrading PCs to version 25H2. As Microsoft explains, “The machine learning-based intelligent rollout has commenced for devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 24H2 that are not managed by IT departments. These devices will receive the update automatically when they are prepared.”

This terminology can be somewhat perplexing. However, it is crucial to understand that Microsoft isn’t merely providing an “offer”for the update, typical of the regular Download and Install feature. Instead, the Windows Update will silently download version 25H2 in the background, allowing you to decide if and when to install the update or defer it.

“No action is required, and you can choose when to restart your device or postpone the update, ” affirms Microsoft.

While Microsoft utilizes “machine learning” to identify suitable PCs for this rollout, it’s worth noting that this practice has been ongoing for years, well before various AI tools became mainstream.

The Importance of This Year’s Update

The Windows 11 25H2 release, often referred to as the “Windows 11 2025 Update, ” is a minor yet significant upgrade that users of Windows 11 24H2 should consider. Our assessments at Windows Latest revealed that this version is relatively small, roughly 166KB, primarily serving to update the OS version or build number.

Post-update, users will not notice significant differences; features like the redesigned Start menu or colorful battery icons are already present in version 24H2. If installing Windows 11 25H2 leads to issues, it is likely due to one of the monthly cumulative updates released around the same timeframe.

It’s important to understand that while Windows 11 25H2 is largely comparable to 24H2, it is essential for lifecycle management. Support for version 24H2 concludes on October 13, 2026, whereas version 25H2 extends support until October 12, 2027. This version, though similar, effectively prolongs your PC’s lifespan in anticipation of the significant Windows 11 26H2 release expected next year. Furthermore, Microsoft is also preparing a 26H1 update scheduled for the first half of the year, specifically targeted at ARM devices such as Snapdragon X.
