The default screenshot utility in Windows 11 is a useful and feature-rich application, but it has one significant limitation: users cannot change the default screenshot folder. While it is possible through some registry modifications, the app does not provide an easy way for users to choose where to save their screenshots. Fortunately, this is set to change.
With the recent announcement of two new Windows 11 preview builds for the Dev and Beta Channels, Microsoft has also introduced an updated version of the Snipping Tool app. The main feature of version 11.2408.13.0 is the ability to change the default folder for saving screenshots and screen recordings.
We are rolling out an update for Snipping Tool (version 11.2408.13.0 and newer) to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that allows users to specify the folder where original screenshots and screen recordings are automatically saved. Simply navigate to the app settings in Snipping Tool to select your preferred default folder!
Although this update is currently available only to Windows Insiders, you can still access version 11.2408.13.0 without waiting for the public release or signing up for the preview program. Just be aware that since this is a preview update, it may not be as stable as the official version.
- Visit store.rg-adguard.com and choose ProductID from the first drop-down menu.
- Enter 9MZ95KL8MR0L in the search field.
- Select Fast from the next drop-down.
- Download the Microsoft.ScreenSketch_2022.2408.13.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle file (you may also opt to download a newer version if available).
- Execute the downloaded file and click Update to install the latest version.
Afterward, open the Snipping Tool app, go to Settings, and expand the “Automatically save original screenshots“option. Click Change to choose a new folder for your screenshots and screen recordings. If you encounter any issues, you can uninstall the Snipping Tool and download the latest stable version from the Microsoft Store.
