Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday Update 25H2 Faces Significant Challenges
This past week, Microsoft rolled out its inaugural Patch Tuesday update (KB5066835) for Windows 11 25H2, marking a rocky beginning for this new feature update. Although the company announced a broader rollout, allowing users to download the latest version, numerous large-scale issues have already come to light.
Emerging Issues with the Update
One of the immediate problems reported was related to localhost authentication, for which Microsoft had to implement an emergency workaround. Additionally, a troubling situation has emerged regarding the usability of USB keyboards and mice during the recovery process.
Impact on USB Devices in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
Reports indicate that following the installation of the Patch Tuesday update, USB input devices are rendered non-functional within the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).This means that if users find themselves needing to navigate recovery options while relying on USB peripherals, they might encounter insurmountable difficulties. It’s a significant concern, particularly for those who may not have alternate input devices readily available.
Recent Recovery Updates
Alongside the contentious Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft launched additional recovery updates (KB5067039 and KB5067019).However, it’s worth noting that the company did not address the USB input issue in the release notes for these updates.
The official description states:
“After installing the Windows security update released on October 14, 2025 (KB5066835), USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, do not function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).This issue prevents navigation of any of the recovery options within WinRE. Note that the USB keyboard and mouse continue to work normally within the Windows operating system.”
The Challenge of USB Dependency
Given that many users rely predominantly on USB inputs due to the diminishing number of PS/2 ports on modern motherboards, sourcing PS/2 devices can be a challenge. In many regions, these older peripherals are increasingly rare. Currently, using a Bluetooth mouse without a USB dongle appears to be the most viable workaround.
Microsoft’s Response and Future Fixes
Microsoft has acknowledged the issues and is actively investigating the situation, assuring users that they are working towards a solution. Ironically, the firm’s latest “Hey Copilot”voice input feature, which is designed as a potential substitute for traditional mouse and keyboard setups, is unfortunately non-functional outside the main operating system.
