Windows 11 version 24H2 is currently experiencing a significant issue where the Event Viewer highlights a critical error related to the firewall, identified as “Windows Firewall With Advanced Security 2042 None.”Although this error is false and completely harmless, Microsoft incorrectly stated that this issue had been resolved in the Windows 11 KB5062553 update released in July 2025. Rather than fixing the problem, the update inadvertently caused the error to appear for all users.

“This update addresses an issue found in Event Viewer as Event 2042 for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. The event appears as ‘Config Read Failed’ with the message ‘More data is available.’” – Microsoft’s official release notes published on July 8.

Recently, Microsoft updated its documentation to quietly acknowledge that their previous claims regarding the resolution of the firewall errors were inaccurate. The company expressed regret over the confusion and assured users that an upcoming cumulative update for Windows 11 will rectify the firewall issues:

“This disclosure was mistakenly updated to Resolved status on July 8. A resolution for this issue is planned to be included in an update to be released in the coming weeks. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion.” – Microsoft

Consequently, it logs Event ID 2042 with the message “Config Read Failed, ” even though the firewall service quickly rereads the data and continues to operate normally.

According to Microsoft, this warning stems from a bug related to code integrated with the latest updates for Windows 11 version 24H2. It is important to note that this glitch affects only the event log entry and not the functionality of the firewall itself.
