Microsoft Acknowledges Windows 11 24H2 Stability Issues Impacting Games, Performance Fixes Under Testing

Microsoft has recently acknowledged the stability issues plaguing Windows 11 24H2, particularly in light of the latest mandatory cumulative updates.

While Windows 11 24H2 represents an improvement over earlier versions, its rollout has been marred by significant issues. Users have reported encountering the notorious Blue Screen of Death, and the situation has worsened following subsequent updates.

During the update process, many users faced installation errors, such as 0x800f0922, 0x80070002, 0x80070306, and 0x800f0991. Additionally, issues emerged while gaming; titles like Fortnite were noted to spontaneously reboot PCs, while some users experienced taskbar freezes upon waking their devices.

The recent cumulative updates have also led to misleading warnings in the Windows Firewall, specifically Event 2042 “Config Read Failed” notifications appearing in the Event Viewer. Furthermore, reports of cursor lag when using Alt+Tab while gaming have surfaced among users.

Particularly after Microsoft’s updates in May 2025, Windows Latest reported that user experience regarding performance significantly declined, with frame rate drops in popular games like Fortnite and CS:GO.

Initially, there was speculation that this downturn in performance might be related to GeForce driver issues, given Nvidia’s track record of occasionally introducing bugs with new driver versions. However, it has since been clarified that the performance hiccups stemmed from the recent cumulative updates.

Several users expressed that their devices felt markedly “slower” following the June 2025 updates, highlighting widespread concern regarding the stability of the system.

Identifying the Cause of Stability Issues in Windows 11 24H2

In an update reflected in its support document, Microsoft has pinpointed the root cause of these issues. The optional update KB5062660, released on July 22, aims to rectify these stability problems.

Microsoft explains, “This update addresses an issue observed in rare cases after installing the May 2025 security update and subsequent updates that caused devices to experience stability issues, ” a finding confirmed by Windows Latest.

While Microsoft has not disclosed the underlying reasons for the performance grievances, affected users noted that their systems could become unresponsive. For instance, switching between applications while using Microsoft Word could result in the program freezing upon resuming after locking the PC.

Similarly, players using Fortnite reported that toggling back to the desktop using the Start button or Alt-Tab led to significant slowdowns and unresponsiveness.

Microsoft acknowledged, “Some devices became unresponsive in specific scenarios, ” indicating the need for further scrutiny.

The release of Windows 11 KB5062660 also introduced a handful of new features, including enhancements to file management within Europe. Testing by Windows Latest indicated that the File Explorer’s Home tab is noticeably quicker, now loading in approximately 2-3 seconds compared to over 10 seconds in previous builds.

As Microsoft continues to monitor the situation, the fix for stability issues related to windows 11 KB5062660 is currently being tested. However, it’s important to note that this update is optional and will not be automatically downloaded. Users can expect these fixes to be included in the August 12, 2025, Patch Tuesday update.
