Amidst ongoing efforts to optimize their systems, tech enthusiasts often turn to third-party applications. Recognizing this trend, Microsoft recently shared a series of practical tips aimed at improving system performance. Key recommendations include:

  • Keeping your operating system and device drivers up to date
  • Regularly restarting your computer
  • Ensuring adequate disk space is available
  • Conducting malware and virus scans

Understanding Features that May Impair Performance

In addition to general tips, Microsoft highlighted specific features in both Windows 10 and 11 that could hinder system performance. A notable point of concern is the default cloud syncing feature of OneDrive. While this function is critical for file accessibility and backup, it can inadvertently slow down performance:

“OneDrive by default sync files… This lets you get to your files from any device that can connect to the internet, and it helps make sure your files are backed up in case your PC is ever damaged or lost. However, syncing can slow down your PC. You can pause OneDrive syncing temporarily and see if it helps improve your PC performance.”

With the recent redesign of the OneDrive app, this issue may become less pronounced.

Visual Effects and Resource Management

Another discussed performance limitation arises from the visual effects of Windows 11. While animations and shadow effects enhance aesthetics, they also consume additional system resources, particularly on devices with limited memory (RAM).Microsoft notes:

“Windows 11 includes many visual effects, such as animations and shadow effects. These look great, but they can also use additional system resources and can slow down your PC. This is especially true if you have a PC with a smaller amount of memory (RAM).”

To manage these settings, simply type “performance”into the Windows Search bar and select “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.”In the Performance Options dialog, choose “Adjust for best performance”under the Visual Effects tab.

Additional Performance Improvement Strategies

Beyond the tips mentioned, users can explore options like ReadyBoost, which allows a USB drive or SD card to function as a cache; however, this feature is no longer available in Windows 11.
