Microsoft 365 Users Gain Access to Copilot Features in OneDrive

In a significant move earlier this year, Microsoft raised the subscription fees for Microsoft 365 services aimed at consumers. To enhance value amidst this price increase, the tech giant has integrated advanced Copilot features into its Office applications. This upgrade now extends to OneDrive on the web, bringing even more AI-driven functionalities to users.

New Capabilities Offered by Copilot in OneDrive

With the introduction of Copilot for OneDrive web applications, subscribers to Microsoft 365 can now enjoy several innovative features designed to streamline their workflow:

  • Summarize: OneDrive has the capability to generate concise summaries for documents, allowing users to create summaries for one document or group together up to five documents at once.

  • Compare: Users can select between two to five documents and ask Copilot to conduct a comparison. The AI will analyze the documents and present the differences in a clear, comprehensible table covering aspects like date, title, author, last modified information, content summaries, location, and key participants.

  • Answer Questions: Users can interact with specific files in OneDrive and pose questions to Copilot, such as extracting a list of ingredients from a recipe document.

Accessibility Expands to Personal Users

Previously, these Copilot features were primarily available for users with work or school accounts. However, Microsoft has now extended access to everyday consumers holding Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions.

Supported File Types and Future Upgrades

At this stage, the Copilot functionality supports a range of text-based file formats, including Office documents, Fluid, Loop, PDFs, TXT, RTF, web files, and OpenDocument formats. Notably, Microsoft has committed to expanding support to additional formats such as images, recorded meetings, videos, OneNote notebooks, and more. As a reminder, files for summarization, comparison, and asking questions are capped at a size limit of 150MB, which Microsoft intends to increase in upcoming updates.

Understanding Your AI Credits

Users should be aware that each interaction with the AI features in Microsoft 365 deducts from their AI credits, which are replenished monthly. For those who exhaust their AI credits, an unlimited access option is available through a subscription to Copilot Pro.
