Microsoft Enhances OneDrive with Copilot AI Integration
In October 2023, Microsoft launched a significant upgrade to its cloud storage service, OneDrive, unveiling plans to incorporate Copilot AI functionality. The rollout continued with the addition of Copilot support for OneDrive on the web in May 2024, followed by its availability for Microsoft 365 users in May 2025. Recently, Microsoft introduced further enhancements aimed at Windows PC users who rely on OneDrive for their cloud storage needs.
New Features in File Explorer and Activity Center
Microsoft has officially integrated Copilot into OneDrive’s File Explorer and the OneDrive Activity Center, which can be accessed directly from the Windows taskbar. This integration is designed to help users make the most of their OneDrive experience and maximize the capabilities of their cloud storage.
User Experience Enhancements
This new functionality offers an improved user experience (UX).Users can now perform a right-click on a file within File Explorer and navigate through the OneDrive context menu, where they will discover a selection of Copilot features ready for use. Additionally, those who utilize the OneDrive Activity Center can access Copilot features through a menu option adjacent to specific files.
Key Features of Copilot Integration
The integration presents a range of practical functionalities, including:
- Document summarization
- Generation of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Custom query capabilities for specific questions
- Comparison of up to five files with a detailed output table highlighting differences
However, it’s worth noting that Copilot currently does not support photo and video files, focusing instead on various document formats.
Supported File Types
Microsoft 365 Copilot supports the following file types:
- Microsoft 365 documents (e.g., DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLSX, FLUID, LOOP)
- Standard formats (e.g., PDF, TXT, RTF)
- Web formats (e.g., HTM, HTML)
- OpenDocument formats (e.g., ODT, ODP)
Eligibility for Copilot Features
To utilize these enhancements, users must hold a subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, and their files should be stored on OneDrive. This integration allows subscribers to fully leverage Copilot’s powerful features within their everyday workflows.
