Micron has officially launched the world’s first Gen 6.0 SSD, the Micron 9650. This groundbreaking storage device brings unprecedented sequential read and write speeds to data center environments.

Micron Unveils 9650 Gen6 SSD and Other Cutting-Edge Storage Solutions

As a leading name in the semiconductor industry, Micron has unveiled a new lineup of solid-state drives (SSDs) designed specifically for data centers. Leveraging the state-of-the-art G9 NAND technology, these storage solutions offer superior performance, enhanced efficiency, and low latency across various applications. The range features three different SSD models that cater to the increasing demands of modern data center operations.

While many organizations are still transitioning to PCIe Gen 5.0 solutions, Micron has already introduced its pioneering PCIe Gen 6.0 SSD—the 9650. Capable of achieving an impressive 28 GB/s for sequential read speeds and 14 GB/s for sequential writes, this drive promises to double the performance of existing PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Additionally, Micron claims that the 9650 provides up to 25% more efficiency during random write operations and 67% more efficiency during random reads, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

Key Features of the Micron 9650 SSD:

Next in the lineup is the 6600 ION SSD, which offers an extraordinary storage capacity of 122 TB. Utilizing the E3. S interface, this SSD not only competes with larger form-factor E3. L drives but also maintains a compact design. In a single 1U server, the Micron 6600 ION can achieve up to 2.4 PetaBytes of storage, and when using 36 units, it can expand to 4.42 PetaBytes in a 2U configuration. This SSD is also highly energy-efficient, drawing only 1 watt per 4.9 TB of storage—making it 37% more efficient than a standard 3×36 TB HDD arrangement.

The final piece of Micron’s latest release is the 7600 SSD, which represents a Gen 5 storage solution characterized by its ultra-low latency. With response times under 1 ms, this SSD is ideal for applications involving AI inference and mixed workloads. It is available in various form factors, including E3. S, U.2, and E1. S, thus fitting well into diverse enterprise environments.

The Micron 9650 and 7600 SSDs are already shipping to select customers, with the 122 TB 6600 ION expected to hit the market in Q3 of this year in both E3. S and U.2 configurations. Additionally, a larger 245 TB version of the 6600 ION SSD is slated for release in 2026, further solidifying Micron’s status as a leader in data center storage technology.
