- Creators of the show promise additional easter eggs from Star Wars Legends, fueling fan theories.
In a fascinating twist, the latest episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew features an easter egg linked to Michael Jackson, leading fans to believe that the Disney Plus series may have integrated a classic, lesser-known short film into its narrative canon.
In episode two, the young protagonists navigate a bustling port controlled by space pirates. During their adventure, Kyriana Kratter’s character, KB, interacts with a caged creature that astute fans recognize as a small, winged feline-like being, identical to Fuzzball, a character from the notable Star Wars short film starring Michael Jackson.
According to The Direct, Captain EO is known for featuring Jackson as the heroic captain of a diverse crew tasked with delivering a peace offering to an evil Supreme Leader. The short highlights music’s transformative power, notably through the song “We Are Here to Change the World”. Directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, Captain EO was a groundbreaking experience showcased at Disney theme parks from 1986 to 1998, known for its innovative 4D effects. It made a brief comeback in 2010, honoring Jackson after his passing.
Although George Lucas served as an executive producer for Captain EO, the short film has never officially been classified as part of the Star Wars canon. The inclusion of Fuzzball in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has, however, ignited speculation about the series potentially serving as a prequel to Captain EO. While this theory may appear unconventional, certain aspects of the show lend it some credence.
The official Star Wars databank refers to the winged creature in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew as Fuzzball, hinting that it may not only belong to the same species as the sidekick from Captain EO but could be the same character altogether. Moreover, when fans were first introduced to the beloved character Neel in the series, many initially assumed he was an Ortolan, akin to Max Reebo’s species. However, it has since been clarified that Neel and Max Reebo are indeed different species, further sparking speculation that Neel may be inspired by Hooter, another member of Captain EO’s crew who shares a similar appearance. Some fans have even suggested that Ravi Cabot-Connors’ character, Wim, could be a younger version of Captain EO himself, effectively linking the series back to the short film.
Showrunner Jon Watts has indicated that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will be rich with easter eggs referencing Star Wars Legends—content that was decanonized following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. While this doesn’t necessarily mean Captain EO will be made canon through this series, it presents an intriguing possibility that might enhance viewer enjoyment of an already captivating series.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew new episodes drop every Tuesday on Disney Plus.
