The renowned Ukrainian studio 4A Games, known for its acclaimed Metro game series, has unveiled a significant rebranding initiative, introducing itself under the new name Reburn. Along with this change, the studio has announced its upcoming project, a highly anticipated first-person shooter titled La Quimera. This marks Reburn’s first venture outside the Metro universe for traditional gaming platforms, excluding virtual reality.
4A Games operates from two primary locations in Ukraine and Malta, and as of September 2024, its parent company, Embracer Group, revealed that the studio is developing two AAA titles. The first of these has now been confirmed as La Quimera, showcased through an eye-catching trailer that primarily features gameplay footage, making it an exciting prospect for fans. This announcement aligns with Reburn’s fresh branding strategy.
La Quimera’s Narrative Joins Forces with Notable Talent
La Quimera is set in a vividly imagined Latin American megalopolis, surrounded by lush jungles. Players will step into the shoes of desperate soldiers from an undisclosed private military company engaged in conflict with rival PMCs. The storyline has been co-developed by the renowned Danish filmmaker and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn, famed for his neo-noir hit Drive, along with lead writer E. J.A. Warren. This collaboration hints at a rich narrative experience.
Co-op Gameplay Enhances the Experience
Reburn has designed La Quimera to include both solo and cooperative gameplay options, allowing two to three players to team up. The studio anticipates that fans of the Metro franchise will appreciate the blend of thrilling gunplay and immersive storytelling in this unique setting that fuses science fiction with Latin American folklore. CEO Dmytro Lymar expressed confidence that this project draws upon their expertise in creating narrative-driven shooters, stating that La Quimera reflects their success in the genre.
As of now, there is no confirmed release date or window for La Quimera, and it is currently slated for a PC launch via Steam, with no announcements regarding console versions. Speculations suggest that the game may not be available until 2026 at the earliest. In addition, 4A Games is reportedly working on another installment in the Metro series, although that project’s timeline remains uncertain.
Overall, La Quimera represents Reburn’s debut of an original intellectual property on non-VR platforms, showcasing the studio’s ambition while branching out from its established Metro roots. The team’s only previous non-Metro title, Arktika.1, received critical acclaim after its October 2017 launch as an Oculus Rift exclusive.
