The realm of mixed reality (MR) devices is becoming increasingly competitive, with significant players like Apple’s Vision Pro and Microsoft’s HoloLens leading the charge. These devices are heralded for their utility in both professional and entertainment contexts. In contrast, Meta, which has heavily invested in the Metaverse, finds itself facing skepticism from consumers regarding the real-world applications of its technologies. The company is now at a crossroads, contemplating whether to double down on its augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) initiatives or pivot away from them altogether.

Meta’s CTO Signals a Crucial Year for the Metaverse

Despite Meta’s ambitious vision of the Metaverse as the cornerstone of future digital interactions, the company appears to be reassessing its AR/VR strategy in light of lukewarm user engagement. As we advance into this pivotal year, the outlook for the Metaverse’s viability hangs in the balance, prompting questions about the allocation of resources in the coming months.

To drive urgency in this evaluation, Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, has reportedly set a one-year deadline for the Metaverse to demonstrate success. This directive places substantial pressure on the Reality Labs team, which oversees the company’s mixed reality devices, to deliver significant advancements. According to an internal post shared on Business Insider, Bosworth outlined his expectations succinctly:

We have the best portfolio of products we’ve ever had in market and are pushing our advantage by launching half a dozen more AI powered wearables. We need to drive sales, retention, and engagement across the board but especially in MR. And Horizon Worlds on mobile absolutely has to break out for our long term plans to have a chance.

This urgency follows a leaked all-hands meeting where Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, expressed that the year ahead is fraught with challenges. He underscored the importance of sustaining Meta’s leadership in the smart glasses market, which is witnessing rapid growth. As such, the Quest VR headsets from Reality Labs seem to be receiving less emphasis, with a stronger focus shifting toward AR wearables than the comprehensive VR experience. This shift could significantly influence the overarching ambitions related to the Metaverse.

Bosworth recognized that, although last year was marked as Reality Labs’ most successful in terms of innovation and product rollout, the overall impact has been underwhelming. With the pivot towards Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which incorporate AI features, the Reality Labs division has become relatively smaller. Nevertheless, Bosworth is optimistic that this streamlined team can accelerate efforts and yield meaningful outcomes. He emphasized the need to implement existing strategies rather than pursue new, untested concepts.

When discussing Horizon Worlds, Meta’s flagship Metaverse platform, Bosworth hinted at a potential turning point, alarming pointing to the need for substantial traction next year. He tongue-in-cheek referred to the current initiatives as a ‘legendary misadventure’ if they fail to gain momentum, suggesting that 2025 could result in a tectonic shift in Meta’s strategic focus. As the landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Meta to see how it navigates these challenges and opportunities.
