Recent reports indicate that both teens and parents are increasingly concerned about the negative repercussions of social media on young users. In response, Meta has introduced Teen Accounts for Instagram and is now leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance user safety and ensure that teenagers are correctly registered in these accounts.
Meta’s Innovative Use of AI for Teen Account Verification
The rise of social media has sparked significant concern regarding its impact on the mental well-being of younger users. A recent Pew Research report involving around 1, 391 teens and parents in the United States sheds light on this issue, revealing that young users are now demanding accountability from these platforms regarding their impact on mental health.
Considering this shift in perception from both teens and parents, Meta launched Instagram Teen Accounts last year and has since extended these features to Facebook and Messenger. These accounts are designed with built-in parental controls that allow adults to monitor their children’s online activities, including the content viewed and the duration of usage. Importantly, any changes to account settings will require parental or guardian consent.

Meta is now intensifying its commitment to safeguard teenage users by expanding the reach of these protections. Although the company has previously utilized AI for age verification, this marks the first instance where it is deploying such technology specifically to enforce safety protocols, a pivotal advancement.
When the AI system identifies a user as underage, despite their claims, those individuals will be transitioned to a teen account with enhanced safety measures. Meta asserts that measures are in place to ensure the accuracy of the AI, incorporating behavioral signals and built-in safeguards. The company is also cognizant of the potential for false positives and has implemented a mechanism allowing users to self-adjust their settings if necessary.
This proactive approach from Meta addresses mounting public and regulatory scrutiny, highlighting the company’s willingness to not only comply with regulations but also to actively seek out innovative solutions to protect younger audiences from the adverse effects of social media engagement.
