Rhythm + Flow: Brazil, Netflix’s inaugural Brazilian rap music reality series, is set to launch on November 12, 2024. Following the success of its counterparts in the United States, France, and Italy, this Brazilian edition aims to spotlight some of the country’s most talented rap and trap artists.
The competition will feature 20 local artists who will vie for an opportunity to be showcased in the upcoming season of Sintonia along with a grand prize of $500,000. With Kamau, a prominent rapper and songwriter, serving as the host, the show’s objective is to discover the next big talent in Brazil’s vibrant rap scene.
Judges of Rhythm + Flow: Brazil
The judging panel comprises renowned artists including Djonga, Filipe Ret, and the dynamic twin sisters Tasha & Tracie. Each judge brings their unique regional influences and cultural backgrounds to provide mentorship and guidance to the competing artists.
Meet the Judges
Djonga
Born Gustavo Pereira Marques in Belo Horizonte in 1994, Djonga has emerged as a major figure in contemporary Brazilian rap. Growing up in Favela do Índio, his powerful lyrics tackle pressing social issues such as racism and inequality, positioning him as a voice for marginalized communities. His journey into rap was inspired by personal relationships and shaped by influences ranging from Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento to rock icon Janis Joplin.
Initially studying history at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Djonga quickly shifted his focus to music where he gained significant traction, using his artistry not only to entertain but also to advocate for social justice, actively participating in anti-racism protests.
Philip Ret
Filipe Ret, originally Filipe Cavaleiro de Macedo da Silva Faria, was born in 1985 in Rio de Janeiro. He first drew attention as a graffiti artist before transitioning into the music world. His early career took off in the early 2000s through energetic MC battles in Lapa.
By 2012, he gained national fame with his album Vivaz, characterized by a distinctive blend of melodic rap infused with philosophical and poetic elements. As a co-founder of the independent label Tudubom Records, Filipe Ret has been instrumental in defining Brazil’s independent music scene and has released critically acclaimed albums like Numa Margem Distante and Audaz.
Tasha & Tracie
Tasha & Tracie Okereke, twin sisters from Sao Paulo, are influential figures in Brazil’s hip-hop community, as well as in fashion and activism. Their careers began with the launch of their fashion blog, Expensive $hit, growing into a cultural movement aimed at empowering Black women from the periphery.
Your heritage, a blend of Nigerian and Brazilian roots, influences their artistic expression as they challenge societal expectations and norms. Starting their careers as DJs at São Paulo’s Batalha de Santa Cruz, the sisters later transitioned to become accomplished rappers, releasing their debut project Cachorra Kmikze and the EP Rouff, which quickly gained underground acclaim.
Renowned for their energetic music that explores feminist themes and celebrates Black identity, their 2020 collaboration with rapper Kyan on the single Tang became a viral hit. In 2022, they earned the ‘Revelation’ award at the WME Awards and received a nomination for ‘Best International Flow’ at the BET Hip Hop Awards. As judges on Rhythm + Flow: Brazil, Tasha & Tracie are poised to inject fresh ideas that merge creativity with activism into the competition.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil is set to shine a light on authentic, homegrown talent, leveraging the extensive experience of judges Djonga, Filipe Ret, and Tasha & Tracie. Anticipation is high for this show as it promises to be a significant milestone in the Brazilian rap landscape.
