MediaTek Dimensity 9400: Supporting Multimodal Gemini Nano Features
Google has launched Gemini Nano with the Pixel 9 series, utilizing the advanced Tensor G4 chipset. This innovative technology empowers smartphones to execute AI functions directly on the device, eliminating the need for internet connectivity to access servers. Gemini Nano allows for various tasks such as generating text and processing audio, among others.
Over time, Gemini Nano has significantly progressed, now featuring multimodal capabilities, which enable it to comprehend multiple forms of media, including both text and images. In a bid to harness this technology, MediaTek has recently declared that its leading chipsets will support Gemini Nano’s multimodal functionality.
In an official announcement, MediaTek revealed that support for Gemini Nano will extend to its Dimensity 9400 chipset. Additionally, this feature will not be restricted solely to the latest SoC; instead, it is expected to be available on other “Generative AI-enabled chipsets”as well.
MediaTek has maintained a collaborative relationship with Google, and the upcoming Dimensity 9400 chipset is poised to facilitate on-device AI processing. While no smartphones featuring the Dimensity 9400 have been introduced yet, it is anticipated that brands like Samsung may unveil their flagship Galaxy S25 series equipped with this chipset in the coming year.
From MediaTek’s statements, it seems that the Dimensity 9400 won’t be the sole chipset capable of supporting Gemini Nano’s multimodal features. The company is likely to extend this capability to its current chipsets and any future releases.
At present, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series operates on the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ processor, which hints at future support for Gemini Nano with multimodality on both the chip and the device.
According to the company’s blog, “MediaTek’s collaboration with Google underscores a mutual ambition to deliver Generative AI experiences throughout the Android ecosystem, marking significant progress in the execution of intricate AI models on-device. By enabling multimodal models, users will have the ability to capture images and obtain comprehensive descriptions of what they depict.”
As of now, there is no set timeline for when MediaTek will unveil the Dimensity 9400 processor or when Gemini Nano will be integrated with MediaTek chipsets.
