On October 18, Rosé from BLACKPINK unveiled her highly awaited pre-release single titled “Apt,”which is part of her upcoming solo album “Rosie.”Collaborating with American pop star Bruno Mars, the track quickly captured listeners’ attention, not only for its infectious melody but also for its compelling title.
The online community buzzed with inquiries about the significance of the term ‘apt,’ with many speculating about possible links to a traditional Korean drinking game. The term Apt, derived from “apartment,”draws inspiration from a classic Korean drinking game known as “Apateu,”which is rooted in the English word “apartment.”
This track artfully merges a cultural reference with upbeat pop sounds, distinguishing it from Rosé’s prior work. In contrast to her more subdued earlier pieces, “Apt”is a vibrant pop anthem, with both artists consistently using the Korean pronunciation “apateu”(아파트) throughout the lyrics.
The catchy chorus, featuring the repetitive phrase “apateu apateu,”cleverly alludes to the chant players shout before starting a round in the game. Additionally, the introduction contains a witty nod to the “Random Game,”a popular activity where the previous round’s loser selects the next game to be played.
In a playful turn, the K-pop star opts for “Apateu.”This lighthearted aspect is mirrored in the lively energy of the song, which aims to encapsulate the joy and spontaneity inherent in Korean culture.
Rosé of BLACKPINK reveals her initial hesitation about releasing a song based on a drinking game
During an exclusive conversation with Vogue, Rosé elaborated on the song’s origins. She expressed that her affection for the Apartment game sparked the idea for “Apt,”but she initially wrestled with the thought of composing a track inspired by it. She reflected,
“I remember going home [from the studio] kind of freaked out. Is this OK, that I’ve written a song about a drinking game?”
Despite her reservations, her team quickly became fond of the song, leading to its eventual release.
As “Apt”garnered global attention, fans eagerly noted the rich Korean cultural references interspersed throughout the music video.
Audiences quickly commended the K-pop sensation for integrating elements that honor her heritage, reaffirming her connection to her roots. One user on X, @jisooswar, tweeted:
“THE WHOLE KOREA GONNA WAKE UP TO ROSÉ MAKING BRUNO SING IN KOREAN LIKEEEEEEE.”
“rosé not forgetting her roots by adding korean lyrics, using a korean game, putting a mini korean flag in the mv and even making bruno singing in korean a bit,”a fan commented.
“She’s spreading the korean language to the global audience with her bruno collab; I know South Korea is feeling proud right now,”wrote another user.
“She didn’t forget about Korea! She’s great,”responded a user.
In a brief yet significant moment in the music video, Bruno Mars sings a few lines in Korean and is seen holding small South Korean flags, further highlighting the song’s cultural significance and delighting fans around the globe.
“Had him with the flags and everything!,”one user remarked.
“I love that Rosé released an English song but incorporated Korean culture in it. I think it signifies that Rosie will be an album blending both her Western and Eastern influences,”another fan shared.
Since its debut, the music video for “Apt”has created significant buzz, quickly becoming the most-liked music video by a male-female duo in 2024, achieving over 1.1 million likes within the first 24 hours on YouTube.
Meanwhile, Rosé’s solo album, “Rosie,”is scheduled for release on December 6, 2024.
