Notable Insights from Frank Grillo on the MCU and DC Universe Transition

  • Frank Grillo has transitioned from the MCU to the DC Universe, assuming the role of Rick Flag Sr.
  • Grillo expresses concern about Marvel’s current trajectory, suggesting they have “overreached.”
  • Unlike his role as Crossbones, which lacked development, Grillo anticipates deeper character exploration as Rick Flag Sr. in the DCU.

Recently, Frank Grillo, known for his portrayal as Brock Rumlow, or Crossbones, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has made headlines after announcing his new role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. In a candid interview, Grillo shared his thoughts on the contrasting worlds of Marvel and DC, hinting at some challenges that Marvel may be facing.

As the inaugural project for the reimagined DCU, the animated series Creature Commandos is set to premiere next month, generating significant buzz. Interviews with Gunn and the cast have revealed intriguing insights about the show and their experiences navigating these rival franchises.

Grillo, who starred in several MCU films including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), is poised to debut as Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming Creature Commandos. Reflecting on his transition, he pointed out that Marvel is undergoing a rough patch, indicating that they might have “gotten a bit too ambitious.” He elaborated, stating, “I think James and Peter are creating a cohesive universe where actors cross over between live-action and animation, enhancing overall character understanding.”

Grillo further commended Gunn’s storytelling prowess, suggesting it eliminates viewers’ confusion about character appearances. He remarked on the “different approach”that DC is taking, emphasizing a positive shift in tone and character depth. His optimism shone through as he highlighted the potential for greater things within the DCU: “I think the sky’s the limit for DC. I really do.”

In discussing his MCU tenure, Grillo acknowledged that his role as Rumlow was quite limited despite its initial promise. Although Rumlow had superhuman capabilities due to his advanced technology, his relative insignificance in the overarching narrative left much to be desired. He noted, “I was a secondary character…and in viewing what’s evolving in the DC Universe, it feels like there are more opportunities.”Rumlow was notably sidelined after his defeat in Captain America: Civil War, leaving an unfulfilling mark for Grillo.

In contrast, Grillo’s new role as Rick Flag Sr. indicates promising multi-faceted appearances. Beyond his presence in Creature Commandos, he is also slated to join David Corensweet in the feature film Superman, scheduled for a July 2025 release, and participate in Peacemaker Season 2, premiering in August 2025. This breadth of character involvement in the DCU enhances Grillo’s enthusiasm, as he values a robust narrative arc.
