McDonald’s Launches New Promotion with Pokemon Cards

McDonald’s Launches Exclusive Pokémon TCG Promotion

  • Fans can receive Pokémon TCG cards with each Happy Meal purchase.
  • The card collection features iconic Pokémon including Charizard and Pikachu.
  • This offer is available until February 24.

In an exciting twist for both Pokémon enthusiasts and fast-food fans, McDonald’s is now including limited-edition Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards with their Happy Meals. As the leading card game globally, the Pokémon TCG remains incredibly popular, making this collaboration a timely response to current market trends.

The latest Pokémon TCG set, known as Prismatic Evolutions, has been met with overwhelming demand, resulting in widespread sellouts across many retailers. The issue of scalpers, who buy bulk products only to resell individual cards at inflated prices, has particularly affected the availability of the Prismatic set. This growing concern raises the possibility that the McDonald’s promotional cards might fall victim to similar scalping practices.

From today until February 24, Pokémon fans who purchase a Happy Meal will receive a pack containing four themed cards. Each pack may include a variety of Dragon-type Pokémon, such as Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Rayquaza, alongside the fan-favorite Fire-type Pokémon, Charizard. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an interactive game on the Happy Meal website, where they guide a Poké Ball through a maze in search of Pokémon.

As the promotion unfolds, the potential for scalpers to exploit the situation remains a point of concern for fans. Similar challenges were faced during the past collaborations, including the highly sought-after Van Goh Pikachu cards in 2022. In response to such frustrations, The Pokémon Company has previously printed extra cards to ensure broader access to fans. It remains to be seen how McDonald’s will navigate this challenge if their Pokémon cards become scarce.

To combat this scalping issue, distributors have implemented measures to limit purchases. For instance, GameStop has restricted sales of the Pokémon TCG to two units per customer. This approach aims to enhance availability for collectors and fans alike. The enduring allure and profitability of the Pokémon franchise—spanning merchandise, movies, TV shows, video games, and trading cards—underscore its impressive staying power, with market momentum showing no signs of waning.
