Honoring Matthew Perry: Family Reflects on His Legacy
In the wake of his passing, Matthew Perry’s family established the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, aiming to support individuals battling addiction. Caitlin Morrison, the actor’s sister, is at the forefront of the foundation as its executive director.
During her interview with Today, Caitlin shared insights about the foundation’s mission and her brother’s aspirations to assist others, stating:
“He dedicated much of his life to helping others and encouraging them to say, ‘I need help.’ He aimed to normalize that bravery.”
Caitlin fondly remembered Matthew as someone who would “drop everything”whenever someone sought his assistance, as this altruism provided him with a profound sense of purpose.
Suzanne Morrison recounted a touching moment shortly before his death when Matthew expressed his love for her, reflecting:
“It felt almost like a premonition. I didn’t recognize it then, but it made me think about how long it had been since we shared a moment like that. It had been years.”
The family reflected on Matthew’s ability to light up a room, while his stepfather noted that beneath that cheerful exterior lay an “insecure and often deeply sad”individual. Suzanne also observed that her son “experienced profound loneliness in his soul.”
In an interview with People, Keith Morrison revealed Matthew Perry’s final wish was:
“[He wants to be remembered] for his efforts to help others, rather than just for his popularity from Friends.”
This wish has become the driving force for the family’s mission, especially through The Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada.
Additionally, there is a foundation in the United States, where Doug Chapin, Perry’s former manager, serves as board president. He shared with People on the anniversary of the actor’s passing that their mission is to bridge the gaps in recovery for those striving to overcome addiction.
