Skeet Ulrich, who portrayed Billy Loomis, is thrilled about the return of his former co-star, Matthew Lillard, in the upcoming Scream 7. In 1996’s original Scream, Ulrich and Lillard played the notorious Ghostface killers, and both have since made noteworthy returns to the franchise. After appearing in the 2022 installment and its sequel in 2023, Lillard’s re-entry into the series was confirmed in late January. Other familiar faces joining them in Scream 7 include Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.
During a panel at MEGACON Orlando, where ScreenRant was present, Ulrich shared his excitement about Lillard’s exciting comeback. He revealed that it was actually Lillard who reached out to give him the news personally. Reflecting on Lillard’s long-standing desire to reprise his role as Stu Macher, Ulrich expressed genuine happiness for his fellow actor’s opportunity to return to the franchise. Matt called me and told me when word came down. I was so ecstatic for you because anybody who has been to one of these [conventions], knows him, or has followed him knows how much he has wanted that, so I’m very happy for you.

Since the debut of Scream, the franchise has introduced many Ghostface killers, but few have achieved the legendary status of Billy Loomis and Stu Macher. This was poignantly highlighted by the enthusiastic response from fans to Lillard’s recent Instagram post, in which he quoted his iconic line: “My Mom and Dad are gonna be soo mad at me!!”
As Ulrich mentioned, Lillard’s wish to reprise his role has been well-known, despite the apparent demise of Stu in the original film. Fans have long theorized about the possibility of his character surviving the fatal incident involving a television drop orchestrated by Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. Lillard has actively endorsed these fan theories, publicly declaring his belief in Stu’s survival during a 2021 interview: “Yes! I’m alive! Stu is alive! You need to support me in this!”
Analyzing the Possibility of Stu Macher’s Return
With Ulrich having had the chance to reprise his role as Billy Loomis, even if only in a hallucination, it seems fitting for Lillard’s character, Stu Macher, to also re-enter the scene. Whether Stu will actually appear alive in Scream 7 remains uncertain. It’s conceivable that Lillard’s return might primarily unfold through flashbacks. Additionally, given the franchise’s penchant for surprising twists, the prospect of Stu Macher re-emerging as the next Ghostface could very well serve as an intriguing plot twist rather than a straightforward narrative trajectory.
