James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios, recently shared exciting news via his social media platforms, announcing a new project in the pipeline. DC Studios is collaborating with Matt Reeves’ production company, 6th & Idaho, and Swaybox to create an animated film titled Dynamic Duo, which will explore the origin stories of the beloved Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
On X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, James Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating:
“Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios / Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.”
He added:
“The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, blending animation, puppetry, and CGI, with a script crafted by the talented Matt Aldrich, produced in partnership with Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special.”
In a statement to Deadline, producer Matt Reeves voiced his excitement about the upcoming film, calling it a “Batman and Robin story for families.”
“I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” Reeves shared.
Swaybox is known for its distinctive style of animation referred to as “Momo Animation,”which integrates CGI, stop-motion animation, and live-action performance. Fans can anticipate that Dynamic Duo will feature a similar animated style. The film will be directed by Arthur Mintz.
As of now, there is no set release date for this forthcoming DC Studios project.
Who are Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in the comic books?
In the comic book universe, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd are recognized as the first and second Robins, respectively. Grayson made his debut in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940, created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. After witnessing the murder of his parents at the hands of a mafia boss, young Grayson was taken in by Bruce Wayne, which led him to become Robin as he teamed up with Batman.
As he matured and embraced his independence, Grayson transitioned into the character Nightwing. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne encountered Jason Todd while the latter was attempting to steal the wheels of the Batmobile, leading to Todd’s first appearance in Batman #401 in November 1986, created by Gerry Conway and Don Newton.
After catching Todd in the act, Batman took him to a reform school, hoping to reform him. However, realizing the school’s illegal operations, Todd informed Batman of the truth and was later taken in to become the new Robin.
Dynamic Duo continues Matt Reeves’ partnership with DC Studios
The origin stories of the Robins in Dynamic Duo marks another chapter in Matt Reeves’ collaboration with DC Studios. Currently spearheading his own Batman universe under the Elseworlds banner, this project will be the fourth production he will develop with DC Studios.
Reeves has recently produced Batman: Caped Crusader and The Penguin, and is also set to direct The Batman – Part II, for which he has written the script.
