Finding completely free language learning apps can be a challenge, despite the multitude of options available. Thankfully, Google’s new Translate Practice feature offers a fantastic way to enhance your language skills without any cost.
An Overview of Google Translate Practice
Integrated within the Google Translate app, the Practice feature allows users to focus on language acquisition through personalized scenarios aligned with their individual goals. You won’t need to download anything extra, as this feature is embedded in an application you likely already have.
Powered by advanced AI, the platform assists you through conversational practice, providing helpful hints when you encounter difficulties.
What distinguishes this feature from other free language learning tools is its lack of limitations. There are no penalties for errors, an absence of distracting ads urging upgrades to premium versions, and no pressure to meet streaks or engagement metrics. You can practice whenever you choose, at a pace that suits your lifestyle.
The rollout for this feature began in August 2025 for users on both iOS and Android. However, please note that it remains in beta, so not all users will have access immediately.
Limitations of the Practice Feature
As of its initial release, Google Translate Practice has a few restrictions. For English speakers, the available languages to learn are limited to Spanish and French. Conversely, those seeking to learn English can only practice if they are already fluent in French, Portuguese, or Spanish.
There is no publicly available timeline from Google on when additional languages might be added.
Since this feature leverages AI, occasional inaccuracies may arise. To counter this, consider obtaining a free dictionary app relevant to your study language to confirm word meanings and phrases.
This feature is exclusively within the Google Translate app. For broader learning options, Google provides other resources for web users. Additionally, users often utilize Chrome’s translation capabilities for language immersion while browsing the internet. If you encounter any issues with Chrome’s translation functionality, refer to our troubleshooting guide.
How to Set Up Your Practice Session
To begin, ensure your Google Translate app is updated to the latest version. Even after the update, you may need to close and reopen the app for the Practice button to appear.
Open the app and click the Practice button. When prompted, select Get Started to enter the Beta phase.

Next, choose your Display language and your Practice language, then click Next. The subsequent screens will guide you through tailored practice settings.

Then, select your current skill level. During the beta phase, the option for Just starting is unavailable; however, even complete beginners can begin with the Basic level thanks to the hints provided.

Finally, you will need to select a specific goal. You can choose from suggested options, describe a different goal, or simply tap Skip to bypass this step. Click Start practicing when you’re ready to go.
Exploring Your Language Learning Options
Each user’s experience with the tool is unique, as Google Translate personalizes practice scenarios based on the chosen goals and current skill level. If you wish to modify your goal later, simply tap the Goal box at the top of the practice screen to adjust or add new objectives.

For instance, I selected everyday interactions as my initial goal, prompting Google Translate Practice to provide exercises centered around greetings and basic dialogues.
Within the Recommended scenarios section, you will find three scenarios tailored to your learning. You can begin by tapping Practice on any of these, or view related vocabulary by selecting Word list, which not only lets you hear pronunciations but also is great for mastering vocabulary.
When you click Practice, you can opt to Listen or Speak. I suggest starting with the Listening practice to immerse yourself in the new language, followed by Speaking to refine your pronunciation.

One of my favorite features is the ability to create custom practice scenarios. Below the recommended section, simply tap Create your own practice scenarios. Here, you can outline your scenario or choose from prompts. You will also get to select between listening or speaking practices. Tap Create once you’re satisfied.

Additionally, you can scroll down to explore even more scenarios to engage with. Expand any option to discover various practice scenarios and hit Practice to begin the one of your choice, with no specific order required.

All vocabulary studied is stored in your account and can be reviewed at any time. Simply tap Words practiced located at the top of the Practice window.
Additional Language Learning Methods with Google Translate
Google Translate offers various other avenues for language learning. The Conversation feature enables back-and-forth translations of dialogues without needing a native speaker, although having one can be advantageous.
You can also enhance your learning experience by seeking media in the target language, using Google Translate to create subtitles for the dialogue as it unfolds in your native tongue. This method aids in vocabulary acquisition.
Moreover, Google has introduced the Live Translate feature, which is currently being rolled out to users. When available, tap Live translate to engage in real-time bilingual conversations. This functions similarly to the conversation feature but allows for quicker exchanges.
An added benefit of this feature is the capability to save conversation transcripts for future study.
If you ever wish to confirm anything from Google Translate Practice, don’t hesitate to explore other free online translation tools or continue learning with additional language apps.
