Masked Singer Fans React to Woodpecker Reveal as Marsai Martin
The third episode of season 12 of The Masked Singer aired on October 9, following its premiere in September. This episode, titled Group A Finals: Soundtrack of My Life, witnessed the elimination of two competitors, Woodpecker and Ship.
Unmasking the Woodpecker, viewers discovered that the talented individual was none other than Marsai Martin, a 20-year-old actress known for her role in ABC’s Black-ish and the 2019 film Little. The identity of The Ship was also revealed as singer-songwriter Paula Cole, famed for her classic hit I Don’t Want to Wait.
Following Woodpecker’s exit, fans took to X to express their thoughts, with many having easily recognized the voice and wondering why the panel of judges failed to make the connection. The reveals caught quite a few viewers off guard.
“WHAT I TELL YOU!!!!!”commented one user on X.
“Y’all guessed it! The Woodpecker is Marsai Martin! I had no clue she could sing like that! Did you?”another fan shared.
“Woodpecker should’ve revealed herself earlier; it’s Marsai Martin from Black-ish. None of the judges guessed it right,”another user remarked.
“I feel like Woodpecker was one of the most straightforward contestants on The Masked Singer, and I can’t comprehend how the judges missed it. Have they not watched Black-ish?”one more fan lamented.
Many enthusiasts of the show confirmed that they had successfully identified the celebrity behind Woodpecker, while those unaware were pleasantly surprised.
“From episode one, I said it was Marsai Martin as the Woodpecker,”an X user declared.
“What did I say?! I figured Marsai was the Woodpecker from the beginning!”another user chimed in.
“Wow! Marsai Martin was the Woodpecker all along!”a third user exclaimed.
“Woodpecker was eliminated! And it turns out to be Marsai Martin! It’s been a minute since I last saw her! Naturally, the Buffalo also delivered an amazing performance!”another fan tweeted.
Panel’s Speculations on Woodpecker
None of the four judges on The Masked Singer were able to recognize Woodpecker’s voice as that of Marsai Martin. Robin Thicke suspected it was Liza Koshy, while Rita Ora leaned towards Keke Palmer. Ken Jeong posed Quinta Brunson as a possibility, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it could be Tatyana Ali.
After delivering a rendition of Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae, Woodpecker found herself in the bottom tier. She later competed against Buffalo and The Ship while performing High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco. Woodpecker was the first to be eliminated, leaving The Ship to battle against Buffalo with Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way.
In her voiceover with hints, Woodpecker mentioned:
“I arise from a legacy of strong women in my family tree, all of whom shared a home together. Can you imagine the amount of perfume, pantyhose, and pink? My great-grandmother introduced me to jazz and Ray Charles, nurturing my love for music.”
She also expressed gratitude towards her maternal grandmother for encouraging her ambitions and her other grandmother for urging her to dream of conquering The Masked Singer in season 12. Her performances were a tribute to the influential women in her life who supported her throughout her journey.
New episodes of The Masked Singer season 12 are available every Wednesday at 8 PM ET on FOX.
