Marvel Snap Temporarily Unavailable in the U.S. Following TikTok Ban
The immensely popular collectible card game Marvel Snap has become inaccessible to users in the United States. This disruption follows the implementation of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which led to the banning of numerous applications, including TikTok.
Unfortunately, MARVEL SNAP is temporarily unavailable on U.S. stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S. In a surprise to Second Dinner and our publisher Nuverse, MARVEL SNAP was affected by the takedown of TikTok late on Saturday, January 18th.
The situation stems from the fact that Nuverse, the game’s publisher, is owned by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. As a result of this ownership structure, all applications controlled by ByteDance, including Marvel Snap, were suddenly banned. However, developers are hopeful for a resolution, pointing out that since the game doesn’t have any direct ties to TikTok, there may be a possibility to restore access in the near future.
About Marvel Snap
Launched in October 2022, Marvel Snap is a free-to-play game developed by Second Dinner, available on several platforms including Windows PC, Android, and iOS devices. At launch, the game boasted a diverse roster of over 170 Marvel characters, a number that has continued to grow with weekly updates.
Gameplay Overview
The mechanics of Marvel Snap are designed for accessibility, attracting fans of all ages. Each player constructs a deck of 12 cards, each representing a unique Marvel character, equipped with specific costs, power levels, and special abilities. During gameplay, competitors strategicially place their cards face down in one of three randomly assigned locations, each with unique effects. Once the round concludes, cards are revealed, triggers are activated, and the player with the highest power in each location wins that space. The overarching objective is to secure dominance in two of the three locations.
Community Impact and Future Prospects
Marvel Snap’s user-friendly design has captivated a substantial fanbase; reports indicate the game has amassed over 22 million registered players and generated over $200 million in revenue since its inception. Developers are committed to restoring service promptly and will keep the community informed as updates become available.
