Marvel Rivals vs Overwatch: Comparing the Best Features of Each Game

Marvel Rivals vs Overwatch: Comparing the Best Features of Each Game

Marvel Rivals and Overwatch, two well-known hero shooters, often find themselves at the center of comparisons. Each title boasts a vibrant cast of characters, each equipped with their own distinctive abilities that set them apart. Both games enjoyed successful launches, but the lingering question remains: do they still captivate the fans who flocked to them initially?

As an avid fan of hero shooters, I’ve enjoyed various titles throughout the years, from Team Fortress 2 to Overwatch, which I logged over 300 hours into since its debut on Battle.net in 2016. My adventure with Marvel Rivals has been equally engaging, with over 200 hours invested and aspirations to reach Lord status with Doctor Strange—though I find myself drawn to Emma Frost more frequently these days.

You may have come across my guides for Marvel Rivals Heroes, which could lead you to think that I lean toward it more favorably. To ensure an objective analysis, I’ve reinstalled Overwatch and revisited a classic I once loved back in 2016.

10 Game Mode Variety

While game mode variety is a challenging comparison, Overwatch takes the lead, mainly due to the extensive content released post-launch. With numerous objective-based modes like Quick Play and Competitive, as well as lighthearted options such as Lucioball and Junkenstein’s Revenge, Overwatch offers a playful spirit that resonates with players.

Upon my return to Overwatch, I was pleasantly surprised to discover new modes, particularly Stadium, which features buy-out periods and buildcrafting elements reminiscent of Deadlock. The variety available ensures a refreshing experience for players.

As the older title, Overwatch has an undeniable edge in terms of content richness, and players eagerly await more innovative modes in the future. That said, Marvel Rivals is also taking steps to follow suit by releasing seasonal game modes during key holidays, promising exciting events ahead.

9 Community Relationship and Trust

Community engagement is essential in any online game. A thriving fanbase is vital for a game’s longevity in the rapidly changing gaming industry.

While comparing communities is often challenging due to their distinct identities, both games attract a similar player demographic. Unfortunately, Overwatch’s goodwill has waned since its release in 2016, impacted by executive decisions that detracted from its enjoyment. However, recent updates introducing new modes like Stadium and a return of features like Loot Boxes have slightly improved public perception.

Conversely, Marvel Rivals has quickly earned player trust through continuous community engagement. Despite being the newer title, developer NetEase has shown a commitment to incorporating player feedback, which has bolstered its reputation among gamers.

The Marvel Rivals community is notably vocal, even organizing strikes in response to concerns over how support players have been treated, highlighting broader issues regarding team balance.

When you look at player statistics, Marvel Rivals outpaces Overwatch with around 600k peak users compared to Overwatch 2’s 75k.Currently, Marvel Rivals boasts a more engaged and robust community, while Overwatch is still striving to regain the trust it once had.

8 Narrative and Lore

Overwatch

In many multiplayer games, lore often serves as a superficial backdrop for gameplay. While Marvel Rivals pits beloved comic book heroes against each other in epic battles, its narrative doesn’t engage players in a meaningful way, with little emphasis on crafting an enticing backstory.

Knowledge of iconic heroes like those from Marvel could detract from the intrigue of their lore, and the seasonal narratives feel minor and peripheral—failing to capture player interest.

In contrast, Overwatch’s narrative was compelling, set against the backdrop of a near-apocalyptic future where human-robot relations strained under the aftermath of war against Omnics.Overwatch crafted captivating cinematics that accompanied character reveals, creating a unique storytelling experience that drew players in.

The early days of Overwatch resonated with themes of heroism and inspiration, igniting a palpable excitement that is still felt. Their cinematic storytelling was truly unmatched.

7 Live Service Experience

Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals Battle Pass

In today’s gaming landscape, Alive service model is essential for keeping players engaged and returning regularly. This raises the question: how do Marvel Rivals and Overwatch measure up in terms of live services?

Unfortunately, both games rely on controversial monetization strategies to invoke FOMO through gacha-style lootboxes and costly cosmetics. While players can purchase cosmetics without affecting gameplay, the pricing often leaves players just short of the required in-game currency, prompting them to spend money.

Overwatch players are reminded that, even after purchasing skins, they are limited to seeing their character’s weapons and hands during select emotes. In contrast, Marvel Rivals enhances the visibility of purchased cosmetics through a third-person camera, making the investment seem more worthwhile.

Marvel Rivals’ battle passes do not expire, allowing players to return even after months and purchase any missed cosmetics, alleviating the pressure associated with time-limited content.

Furthermore, in-game currencies can be acquired by completing daily and weekly challenges, ensuring that players can earn cosmetics without spending money. Overall, Marvel Rivals comes out ahead in this department.

6 Visuals and Performance

Overwatch

The unique art styles of both Marvel Rivals and Overwatch leverage their respective game engines effectively.

Overwatch evokes a polished visual aesthetic resembling animated films, while Marvel Rivals embraces its comic book roots with a character and environment design that draws directly from its origins.Visual fidelity plays a crucial role in competitive games, requiring smooth framerates for a seamless gameplay experience.

Unfortunately, Marvel Rivals struggles with optimization compared to Overwatch. On a decent rig equipped with an RTX 2060, I experienced frame drops in Marvel Rivals, which is surprising given Overwatch ran smoothly on the same setup.

This is not just an isolated issue; community feedback suggests that Marvel Rivals, built on Unreal Engine 5, performs poorly even on higher-end PCs. In contrast, Overwatch utilizes Blizzard’s proprietary engine, allowing for better efficiency, although occasional frame dips still occur.

5 Environments and Maps

Overwatch

Overwatch 2 Map

When it comes to level design and variety in maps, both games offer engaging environments. Nevertheless, Overwatch’s older catalog features more iconic levels inspired by real-world locations.

Overwatch’s map layouts are so well-designed that they leave lasting memories for players—almost everyone remembers strategic health pack locations. Marvel Rivals presents some innovative maps, such as Tokyo 2099, which employs dynamic destruction mechanics, altering battle flows. Yet, they lack the same instant recognizability.

Maps like Route 66, Hollywood, and Dorado have become legendary within the Overwatch community, revered for their strategic depth and aesthetic appeal. While I acknowledge the nostalgic aspect of my preference, Overwatch’s maps are simply more memorable and iconic.

4 Gameplay

Examining gameplay mechanics reveals that Marvel Rivals and Overwatch share several similarities in objectives and game modes, yet their core combat experiences differ significantly.

Overwatch relies on a methodical approach to combat, with players needing precise accuracy and more thoughtful engagement, especially with ultimate abilities that charge slowly. In Marvel Rivals, the gameplay is more energetic, reminiscent of animated brawls. With well-balanced teams, prolonged fights are common until an ultimate ability is unleashed, propelling the tension to another level.

Marvel Rivals also sees quicker ultimate charge times and provides a variety of playstyles with balanced melee and ranged options available. Its fluid combat system offers more dynamic team interactions, allowing players to thrive in creative strategies. Thus, Marvel Rivals earns the win in this category.

3 Teamplay and Roles

Marvel Rivals

Teamplay is essential for success in both Marvel Rivals and Overwatch. Achieving victory relies significantly on having a blend of tanks, damage-dealers, and support characters. Marvel Rivals holds an advantage due to features that encourage diverse compositions without penalizing players.

Introduced Team-Up Abilities offer unique buffs and skills, which shift seasonally, preventing gameplay stagnation. This system amplifies the utility of heroes often viewed as less powerful, allowing developers to experiment and adapt gameplay based on player feedback.

While both games share a three-class dichotomy, Overwatch’s shift from a 6v6 to a 5v5 structure has sparked controversy, stifling creative team compositions and imposing rigid role requirements. The flexibility of Marvel Rivals encourages innovation, resulting in varied team strategies.

2 Characters

Overwatch

Overwatch Heroes Together

As hero shooters, the character diversity in both games is crucial for distinguishing gameplay. Marvel Rivals taps into a rich comic book legacy, while Overwatch has built its unique cast from scratch.

Overwatch often has the upper hand with its characters, as Marvel Rivals has faced critique for its ultimate abilities, which can feel repetitive, and some designs may lack distinction. Overwatch’s heroes, while less frequently released, are meticulously crafted, ensuring they offer unique gameplay and aesthetic qualities.

While Marvel Rivals has its own appealing characters, Overwatch benefits from emerging through original intellectual property, and thus it enjoys a creative advantage.
