Overview of the Upcoming X-Men Reboot
- Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox has delayed the X-Men reboot due to a necessary “cooling-off”phase.
- Professor X’s cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hints at the integration of mutants into the MCU.
- Marvel is strategically introducing X-Men characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ahead of the reboot.
Marvel enthusiasts have long anticipated the emergence of the X-Men within the MCU. A producer from Marvel has shed light on the reasons behind the delay of the reboot while providing encouraging news for fans.
Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in March 2019 included the film rights to prestigious franchises like X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Despite ongoing development for an X-Men reboot, Marvel Studios has begun to weave mutants into the larger MCU tapestry. Significant milestones include Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart) appearing in Doctor Strange and the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, who will team up with Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine slated for 2024. Moreover, Ms. Marvel introduced Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as a mutant, further signaling the gradual incorporation of these characters.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel producer Nate Moore discussed the anticipated reboot, noting that the team is not rushing the process. He cited a “cooling-off period”following Disney’s acquisition as a crucial factor that led to the gradual introduction of mutants in MCU productions.“Now that we can build the path towards X-Men, we want to start sprinkling in these elements so viewers won’t feel overwhelmed when the film eventually arrives, ” Moore articulated, emphasizing the importance of laying groundwork for the franchise’s future.
Moore also mentioned that plans for the X-Men remain “pretty fluid, ”indicating ongoing development and progress towards the reboot. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, backed this narrative during the APAC Disney Content Showcase held in Singapore last November. He communicated the gradual integration of X-Men, stating, “It has already started. Certainly, Deadpool & Wolverine was the biggest yet.” He further hinted that recognizable X-Men characters would continue to feature prominently in subsequent films, leading into the narrative of Avengers: Secret Wars, which promises a new era for mutants.
Fans can certainly agree with Feige’s assessment. Wolverine’s collaboration with Deadpool has already proven lucrative, grossing over $1.3 billion and establishing a strong precedent for future installments. Rumors suggest that Professor X might also make an appearance in Secret Wars, aligning perfectly with his role in founding Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where he trains young mutants to use their abilities responsibly. If Secret Wars serves as a foundation for an X-Men revival, Professor X’s rumored role seems very plausible.
Avengers: Secret Wars is anticipated to premiere in theaters on May 7, 2027, and fans are eager to see how the story unfolds.
