Winderbaum noted, “We always viewed it as an anthology at heart, with an overarching narrative primarily centered around Uatu, the Watcher, and his journey.” His indication that the series has reached a natural closure raises questions about further explorations.

During the interview, Winderbaum addressed the interconnection between the show and the broader MCU narrative. He stated, “We closely followed the established mythology, particularly the foundations laid out by the multiverse as it unfolds in the MCU. This helps contextualize why now seems the perfect time to conclude ‘What If…?’ with this season.”While the series was never intended to be a part of the main MCU storyline, it aligns with the broader themes emerging in works like Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although the reasons behind wrapping up the series remain unclear, Winderbaum assures fans that they will see the reasoning in due time.

Bryan Andrews, the director of season three, acknowledged missed opportunities, particularly concerning the X-Men.
