Married at First Sight (MAFS) Season 18 is grappling with an apparent issue of clout chasing among several cast members. In the realm of reality television, clout chasers are individuals who join shows not with genuine intentions to form meaningful relationships, but rather to leverage the platform for personal gain. This trend is not new to MAFS, but the prevalent self-promotion present in the current season is striking. Cast members seem more focused on advancing their businesses and enhancing social media followings than on the essence of marriage, thereby undermining the show’s integrity.
This season features five couples: Ikechi Ojoré and Emem Obot, David Trimble and Michelle Tomblin, Allen Slovick and Michelle Tomblin (note that there is likely an error here, as Michelle is listed twice), Juan Franco and Karla Juarez, as well as Camille Parsons and Thomas. A panel of three marriage counseling experts was responsible for selecting the participants, conducting interviews to identify potential outsiders with hidden agendas. Despite this effort, it appears the vetting process for Season 18 has fallen short.
Ikechi Ojoré
Ikechi’s Open Self-Promotion

This marks the second time Ikechi Ojoré has applied to be on MAFS, previously auditioning for the tenth season in Houston. His repeated attempts raise red flags about his true motivations, hinting at a desire for fame rather than genuine commitment. As both an author and a musician, he has actively promoted his creative endeavors throughout the season. Ikechi’s lack of effort to genuinely connect with his wife Emem suggests that his primary interest lies in the publicity that MAFS affords him.
Juan Franco
Entrepreneurial Aspirations

Juan, aged 36, has been vocal about his tech startup, Flight Mate, which aims to enhance user experience by allowing friends to connect on flights. Throughout the season, he has repeatedly highlighted his entrepreneurship, wearing branded apparel during appearances and eagerly showcasing his business acumen. Prior to this, Juan also worked as a model, and it is plausible that he intends to leverage the show to further his modeling career.
Mountain Peace
Entrepreneurial Efforts in Health

Emem works as a Nurse Practitioner and owns her own medspa, which has been prominently featured in the season’s episodes. This recurrent highlight raises questions about whether she is using the platform to boost her Chicago clientele or if she has bigger ambitions for her brand through the show’s visibility.
Karla Juarez
Pursuit of Business Opportunities

Karla has emerged as a prominent figure among the clout chasers this season. Initially homeless, she moved into Juan’s shared apartment seeking financial security. Karla has expressed her desire for financial support from Juan, which he has hesitated to provide. Her storyline is heavily anchored in her aspirations to start a hair business, with frequent mentions of her plans after quitting her salon job to pursue entrepreneurship.
In addition to her hair business ambitions, Karla is also involved in sound bathing and Pilates instruction. Her strategic promotion of these ventures on the show indicates that she is leveraging the exposure to build her personal brand and clientele.
This season, it appears that four out of the ten cast members are using Married at First Sight as a stepping stone for self-promotion rather than focusing on the show’s intended objective of fostering genuine marital connections. As the season approaches its midpoint, viewers can likely expect to see more about the personal enterprises of Ikechi, Juan, Emem, and Karla, with less emphasis on their marital journeys.
Married At First Sight airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
