Markus ‘Notch’ Persson Hints at a Spiritual Sequel to Minecraft

Markus ‘Notch’ Persson Teases Spiritual Successor to Minecraft

In an exciting development for fans of one of the most successful video games ever, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson recently teased a potential spiritual sequel to Minecraft. Following his departure from Mojang after selling the studio to Microsoft for a staggering $2.5 billion in September 2014, Notch embarked on a new venture. He founded Rubberbrain, yet that studio did not release any titles. However, in a significant shift, he has revived this initiative under the name Bitshift Entertainment in 2024.

Polling Fans for a New Direction

On January 1, 2024, Persson shared insights about Bitshift’s current project, which combines elements of a traditional roguelike and a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler. Interestingly, he also engaged with his followers through a poll to gauge their interest in a spiritual successor to Minecraft. The results yielded a resounding 78% of participants favoring the idea of a new game reminiscent of the original.

Persson expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I basically announced Minecraft 2. I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.”He emphasized his intent to pursue this new game sincerely while maintaining transparency about the potential pitfalls usually associated with spiritual successors.

Intentions Clear For New Project

In addressing the concerns surrounding sequels, Persson remarked, “My intentions are to be clear and honest about it, saying that spiritual successors are usually kind of… you know… washed up.”He acknowledged his past failures but highlighted the lessons learned through his experiences. “Winning is failing until you make yourself succeed,”he remarked, showcasing his commitment to growth and improvement.

Persson also made it clear that he respects the ongoing efforts of the Mojang team and Microsoft, ensuring his new endeavor does not infringe on their achievements. He expressed admiration for how Mojang has allowed its teams to innovate while maintaining a successful franchise.

Response from the Community

In response to queries about the possibility of creating Minecraft 2, Persson clarified, “No, I’d make a similar game based on what I think the audience that says they want that game might enjoy. Probably do early access to make sure we’re on track.”He humbly acknowledged his own doubts about his abilities, stating, “I still sort of think I’m just a clown getting lucky in a sea of actual talents.”His candidness about this new venture resonates with fans eager to see a fresh take on the beloved original.

Legacy of Minecraft Continues

Despite Persson’s attempts at a new creation, he faces the inevitable challenge of comparison to Minecraft, which remains incredibly popular. Mojang continues to provide regular updates and expansions to the game, the latest being “The Garden Awakens,”released in early December 2023. This patch introduced a new biome and mobs, ensuring that the Minecraft community remains engaged.

In addition to the core game, several spin-offs have emerged, including Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends, catering to fans seeking diverse experiences within the Minecraft universe. Furthermore, an exciting development is on the horizon with a Minecraft Movie slated to hit theaters on April 4, 2025, reaffirming the franchise’s enduring appeal.
