Mario & Luigi: Brothership introduces a new threat to the islands of Concordia. The villain Zokket is unleashing a notorious substance known as Glohm, a harmful purple goo that disrupts social connections and significantly boosts the power of all enemies it encounters. Players must confront these Glohm-empowered foes, including formidable bosses from the Extension Corps that players previously defeated at the Great Lighthouses across different oceans. Overcoming these enhanced adversaries will not only yield valuable items but also provide crucial experience points necessary to thwart Zokket’s plans.
Initiating the Side Quest
To embark on this side quest, players must engage with Dewey Fightem located on Shipshape Island. This character is positioned near a trio of NPCs who evaluate players’ gear, levels, and Battle Plugs.
Players can initiate this quest at any point after the wedding of Chilliam and Burnadette. To access this story event, players must first complete the ice block puzzle on Slippenglide Island and extinguish the lava threats on Skorcheen Island.
No time constraints affect this side quest, allowing players to progress in the main storyline beyond the wedding without missing the opportunity to battle Glohm Gobblick.
Upon defeating Glohm Gobblick, Dewey rewards players with new boots and a valuable Battle Plug. A perfect incentive for players to step up as heroes!
Item | Description | Stats |
---|---|---|
Gobblick Boots DX | When you deal damage, you heal 10% of it back. | Jump +123, Stache +5 |
Anti-Glohm Specialist (Battle Plug) | Jump and Hammer attacks against Glohmed enemies are guaranteed critical hits. | Charges: 10, Recharge Turns: 30 |
Finding Glohm Gobblick
To face Glohm Gobblick, players must sail from Shipshape Island back to the Great Lighthouse situated in the Lushgreen Sea. Upon reaching the Great Lighthouse, use the cannon to land ashore.
Be sure to press X to accelerate Shipshape Island’s navigation through Concordia’s currents! This journey also serves as an opportunity to revisit previous islands to see if new areas have been unlocked by Connectar Flowers.
There’s no need to retrace steps through Gobblick’s boss room basement; simply jump into the Warp Pipe located in the northwest corner of the island, next to the traveling merchant.
If this pipe was not previously unlocked, players will need to walk some distance, but fortunately, they will not face any puzzles a second time!
Prepping for the Encounter
After warping to the Great Lighthouse’s basement, make sure to utilize the Save Block right outside the boss room, as entering will automatically trigger the re-battle.
As the initial Glohmed boss, Glohm Gobblick escalates the battle’s difficulty if faced immediately upon unlocking. Dewey recommends being at least level 35 for optimal chances at victory.
Since the storyline does not require a level around 25 during the Heatfreeze Island wedding, players should feel confident tackling this challenge. Nonetheless, returning at a higher level if necessary is always an option.
Players should make a trip to the merchant, either here or at Shipshape Island, to restock on Mushrooms, Syrups, and Nuts before heading into battle. Additionally, equip the best Gloves and Accessories to enhance performance during combat. Avoid the common mistake of remaining equipped with a Quick-Charge Brooch instead of switching to a more defensive item prior to the boss fight.
Choosing Battle Plugs
Choosing the correct Battle Plugs can significantly affect survivability while taking on a Glohmed adversary.
Be cautious; Glohm Gobblick’s attacks can inflict the Glohm status, hindering Mario and Luigi’s cooperative capabilities for Bros. Attacks or utilizing Luigi Logic. A Refreshing Herb provides only a 50% chance of relief from this effect, while the Auto Herb plug allows for automatic usage each turn.
Ampberries effectively cure the Glohm status, yet they are limited in availability at this stage of the game. If players have progressed through Wayaway Island in the Gulchrock Sea, they can access the Auto Ampberry plug to assist with recovery.
Additionally, ensure to start the battle with favored defensive plugs equipped. Surefooted Guard is especially beneficial for preventing Dizzy status. Meanwhile, plugs like Auto 1-Up, Easy-Peasy Counters, and Damage Shield can be extremely useful to adapt to Gobblick’s more unpredictable patterns.
Engaging Glohm Gobblick
Prepare for Glohm Gobblick’s enhanced abilities as he becomes more aggressive and rapid compared to previous encounters.
This is where the Easy-Peasy Counters become essential; utilizing aerial attacks or a hammer’s broader hitbox can avoid incoming damage while adjusting to Gobblick’s intensified tempo. Dodging remains crucial, as is customary in Mario-style RPGs!
The good news is that, like before, Glohm Gobblick has no added defenses to thwart your attacks. Maintain a relentless offensive strategy using your favorite Battle Plugs and consistent Bros. Attacks.
Specifically, Luigi’s Jump Helmet excels in delivering heavy single-target damage particularly effective during the initial phase of the Glohm Gobblick encounter.
Mario’s Red Shell also functions as an effective damage dealer, and after progression in the Gulchrock Sea, players can unlock Mario’s Clockout Blow, which inflicts significant damage to a singular target.
Clockout Blow is a personal favorite among Bros. Attacks; when paired with the Bros. Boost plug and/or Luigi Logic stuns, it empowers Mario to inflict serious damage on Brothership’s bosses, successfully assisting in clearing all three “Painful Blow”challenges.
A notable distinction in Glohm Gobblick’s attacks is his ability to spit Candy instead of Coins during the Junk Barrage attack. Acquiring Candy can significantly shift the fight’s dynamics since it provides recovery for both HP and BP.
Activating Luigi Logic
Continue attacking Glohm Gobblick until a whirlwind manifests nearby, marking the opportunity to trigger Luigi Logic.
Utilize your health recovery strategies, such as Auto 1-Up and Auto Herb, to guarantee both brothers are fit enough to activate this bonus phase.
Spin Gobblick into the whirlwind using the B button, rewarding players with a window during which all attacks deliver critical hits against Glohm Gobblick.
If players find themselves at a disadvantage level-wise, this window can also serve as a valuable healing period. Persist with alternating attacks and utilizing Luigi Logic stuns, and the weed will eventually be uprooted, yielding a Gold Medallion worth 1,000 Coins.
Since the Return Pipe isn’t accessible on a Great Lighthouse island, navigate back through the Warp Pipe to launch yourself via cannon back to Shipshape Island. Once there, speak with Dewey Fightem to redeem your well-deserved rewards.
Beware; Dewey may have yet another Glohmed boss waiting for you!
