March 25 Marks the Conclusion of an Era for Nintendo Gamers

Overview of My Nintendo Gold Points Discontinuation

  • My Nintendo Gold Points will officially cease operations on March 25, 2025, signaling the end of a significant chapter in Nintendo’s loyalty program.
  • Users can still utilize existing Gold Points up until they expire, adhering to Nintendo’s established 12-month expiry policy.
  • No changes are being made to My Nintendo Platinum Points, which will remain intact and available.

My Nintendo Gold Points, a popular component of Nintendo’s loyalty initiative, are set to be discontinued on March 25, 2025. This date signifies the conclusion of nearly seven years of service for a feature that has been an integral part of Nintendo’s rewards program since its introduction.

The international launch of My Nintendo took place in March 2016, followed by the integration of Gold Points in 2018, which allowed players to earn rewards through their purchases on the Nintendo Switch. With Gold Points, customers gained 5% back on digital purchases and 1% on physical games, with each point translating to a $0.01 or €0.01 discount for subsequent eShop transactions.

On February 28, Nintendo officially announced the termination of Gold Points as part of a broader initiative regarding its loyalty scheme. The announcement specified that the discontinuation would take effect at 12:30 am ET on March 25, 2025. While Nintendo did not provide detailed reasoning for this change, they did clarify some pertinent aspects regarding how it would affect Nintendo Switch users.

Gold Points Usage and Expiration Timeline

Following the cessation of Gold Points, current users will still have the ability to utilize the Gold Points accumulated in their accounts up until they naturally expire. Although no new Gold Points can be earned after March 25, the remaining balance will remain available for expenditure in compliance with the program’s pre-existing expiration parameters. Notably, points will remain valid until the last day of the month—a full 12 months after they were earned, potentially allowing some users to redeem their points as late as March 31, 2026.

Continuity of My Nintendo Platinum Points

It’s important to note that the discontinuation of Gold Points will not affect My Nintendo overall. The program will continue to offer Platinum Points, which can be acquired through various activities linked to both games and mobile applications, many of which do not involve any financial commitment from users. These Platinum Points have a shorter lifespan, expiring six months post-accumulation, and can be redeemed for exclusive merchandise or digital items such as wallpapers.

Interestingly, the discontinuation is scheduled just a week before the anticipated Nintendo Direct, which is expected to focus on the much-discussed Switch 2 console. This timing has sparked speculation among fans regarding a possible replacement for Gold Points. However, Nintendo has not confirmed any such developments. Additionally, some gamers theorized that the removal of Gold Points could be a strategic move to prevent their usage for discounts on Switch 2 titles, yet the rationale for a complete discontinuation remains ambiguous, especially since existing vouchers will continue to be valid.
