Fans of Tiana, the first Black Disney princess, experienced disappointment last week when news broke about the cancellation of the anticipated Tiana series on Disney+.Many, myself included, were upset, as The Princess and the Frog has secured a beloved spot in the hearts of many Disney enthusiasts due to its exceptional animation and compelling narrative. While Disney plans to release a Tiana-themed special, the decision to cancel the series is viewed by many as a significant oversight.
Actress Anika Noni Rose, who portrayed Tiana’s enchanting voice, voiced her discontent on social media. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she expressed her sorrow over the show’s cancellation, sharing that she has received countless messages of support and disappointment from fans.“Last week, an announcement was made regarding the cancellation of the series Tiana. I’ve been inundated with messages, ” she explained, opting to speak directly to her audience.
Rose articulated her feelings further, stating, “I, too, am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short. The series was a long time coming, with countless talented individuals dedicating their hearts to this project, including long-time champion Jenn Lee, our amazing director/writer Joyce Sherri, talented animators, and an incredible music team.”

She continued by urging fans to support the upcoming “Tiana Special Event” by encouraging friends and family to tune in.“As heart-wrenching as it is to see a project you’re passionate about come to an unexpected end, I hope that when the special airs, all you beautiful, loyal fans will rally together and show your support, ” she emphasized.

Amidst the outcry, fans speculate if Disney’s hesitance in developing Tiana-centric projects could stem from concerns over viewership. One user on Bluesky remarked, “This indicates that Disney might be worried about Tiana’s appeal… as if she isn’t one of the most beloved princesses.” Another fan lamented, “I was eagerly looking forward to this series, and it’s a real disappointment. Tiana deserves better.”

Fans remain fervent in their support for Tiana, emphasized by another user’s comment on X, stating, “She clearly LOVES being Tiana, and Disney can’t afford to dismiss this legacy.” As the disappointment settles among the Princess and the Frog fandom, there remains hope for the special event, conditional on its eventual rollout.
Why Tiana Deserves More Recognition
Tiana’s character has often been underappreciated by Disney until recently, notably after the transformation of Splash Mountain into “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.” Reactions to this change were mixed, with some labeling it as “woke.” As discussions about representation continue, there is growing concern that political factors, especially anti-diversity initiatives during previous administrations, may influence Disney’s approach to Tiana’s character and visibility.
Overall, many believe Tiana should have a more prominent position within the Disney universe. Fans are united in their desire for Tiana to be featured more substantially, and the recent cancellation of her series has ignited a conversation about representation and the importance of diversity in animated storytelling.
With the upcoming special, fans hope to prove that Tiana’s legacy endures and that she has an ardent following that can influence future projects. The fervent discussions and reaction of the online community underscore an undeniable truth: Tiana is loved and valued.
