Kadokawa, one of Japan’s foremost publishers of manga and light novels, is embarking on an ambitious growth trajectory. By the fiscal year 2027, the company aims to release a remarkable 9, 000 titles each year, marking a 50% increase from its output in 2023. This initiative coincides with a strategic partnership with Sony Group, which has recently acquired a 10% stake in Kadokawa. This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance Kadokawa’s international presence, capitalizing on Sony’s extensive entertainment network to optimize the potential of its intellectual properties.

As reported by Nikkei, Kadokawa’s President, Tsuyoshi Natsuno, emphasized the importance of diversity and variety in this expansive plan. With a restructured editorial framework and a focus on tapping into international markets, Kadokawa is positioning itself for a publishing transformation that transcends Japanese borders.

To accommodate this dramatic increase in output, Kadokawa plans to bolster its editorial staff by approximately 40%, eventually increasing its team to about 1, 000 editors by the middle of the decade. This move not only aims to distribute the workload but also ensures that editorial quality remains intact despite the rising production demands. By strategically recruiting seasoned mid-career professionals, Kadokawa is focusing on blending expertise with operational efficiency.

This expansion aligns with Kadokawa’s “media mix strategy, ” which leverages its published works to develop cross-media adaptations, including anime, video games, and live-action films. This strategy not only amplifies the reach of Kadokawa’s intellectual properties but also complements Sony’s established global entertainment prowess. With Crunchyroll, owned by Sony, already streaming over 20 titles from Kadokawa, this partnership has the potential to revolutionize how manga and light novels are disseminated globally.

A core element of Kadokawa’s strategy is its ambition for international growth. Presently, only 1% of its revenue is derived from IPs originating outside Japan. However, the company aims to elevate this figure to between 20% and 30% within the next decade. This goal will involve the creation and acquisition of new works targeted specifically at English and Chinese-speaking markets, as well as potential mergers and acquisitions in these regions.

The partnership with Sony also underscores the rising global appetite for Japanese content, as evidenced by Hollywood and Korean live-action adaptations. Natsuno notes that Japan’s rich creative diversity presents a significant competitive edge, particularly when contrasted with countries like Korea, where while production capabilities are strong, the variety of original creations is comparatively limited. By merging bold publishing objectives with strategic alliances, Kadokawa is poised to transform the global manga and light novel landscape, ensuring that its captivating stories reach audiences across the globe.
