
In many respects, inZOI adheres closely to the established framework of its predecessor life simulation games, but it also introduces a distinct feature: a comprehensive karma system. This innovative element significantly affects gameplay, illustrating how individual actions can reverberate throughout the community.
For each Zoi, their personal karma status can be easily viewed via their info card. However, what sets inZOI apart is the broader, city-wide implementation of this karma system. Unlike the more solitary lives of characters in The Sims, Zois are more community-focused, meaning that negative karma isn’t contained; it affects the overall population, creating challenges even for the most virtuous residents.
If you’re new to this dynamic, you’ve likely encountered some of the frustrations associated with the karma system, which has gained notoriety for being quite unforgiving. Given that inZOI is currently in early access, it’s possible that gameplay mechanics related to karma will undergo changes in future updates. Until then, allow us to provide an overview of the inZOI karma system and tips for managing city-wide karma.

Understanding Karma in inZOI
The karma system in inZOI operates on two primary levels: the individual karma of each Zoi and the collective karma of the city as a whole. Karma is visually represented by a symbol featuring two intertwining orbs, reminiscent of a yin-yang illustration, echoing various artistic interpretations of the human soul.
Actions that generate positive karma produce orbs in a soft bluish-green hue, while negative actions manifest as red orbs. Karma without a clear moral implication appears as purple orbs. A playable Zoi’s karma can be easily tracked through their Zoi Card, which displays their karma meter alongside other essential information such as age and education.

Managing a Zoi’s karma is relatively straightforward: engage in positive interactions indicated by the bluish-green symbol and steer clear of actions that incur negative karma, represented by the red symbol.

You can even disable autonomous actions (using the toggle beside the needs tab) if your Zois are becoming unruly while left to their own devices. However, beware: increasing the game speed resets this feature, necessitating manual supervision after accelerating through a night or day.
City-wide karma operates differently. Each midnight, you receive a Soul Management Report from the charming, wide-eyed cats, who serve as the game’s overseers. This report summarizes the average karma levels for your entire city, considering both your Zois and the unplayed characters residing there.
If you encounter unsatisfactory results, remember, you are not singularly responsible. The report highlights four levels of city karma: Good, Normal, Warning, and Caution. Individual Zois are assessed on a seven-point scale from “best”to “terrible, ”with “normal”serving as the median.
Currently, even a slight dip in average karma can tip your city into Caution mode, as many Zois tend to exhibit antisocial behavior when uncontrolled. While a majority may hold “normal”karma, they often do not positively influence the city’s overall score, highlighting the significant impact of just a few negative actors.
Impacts of Negative Karma in inZOI
Initially, individual Zois suffering from bad karma seem to experience minimal consequences. There are rumors of negative-karma Zois facing untimely demises from unspecified “natural causes, ”although this could stem from unrecognized mechanics or glitches inherent in early access.
However, Zois plagued by poor karma do encounter limitations, particularly in their interactions with other characters and objects, which can create a spiral effect as negative karma breeds further negativity.
The most noticeable outcome tied to poor karma is that Zois who perish while in the red will not transition to the afterlife, instead haunting the city as ghosts until they resolve their karmic misdeeds.

This phenomenon further complicates city management: an accumulation of ghostly residents can hamper the birth of new Zois, leading to stalled population growth and, in extreme cases, transforming your vibrant community into a desolate ghost town. While this idea may seem intriguing, falling into such a scenario inadvertently would be unfavorable.
Another consequence of negative karma is the infamous “meeting with the CEO.”This event occurs when you, as the overseer of the simulation, are summoned to confront the lead cat for failing to enhance your city’s karma. Although it may eventually lead to a game-over situation, thus far, despite multiple notices regarding low city karma, I have yet to experience such a meeting. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details emerge!
Strategies to Manage City Karma in inZOI
As noted earlier, maintaining a Zoi’s individual karma in the positive zone is quite feasible: engage in kind actions, avoid negative behavior, and, if necessary, disable autonomy to exert direct control.
The complication arises in managing the daily karma activities of the approximately one hundred Zois residing in your city, especially since individual oversight is not practical.
Currently, disabling inZOI’s karma system entirely is not an option, yet there are in-game strategies that may assist you in better managing your city’s karma.
Utilize the Soul Management Report
During the nightly Soul Management Report, check the Karma Status tab to intervene with any Zois experiencing extreme karma ratings. By clicking the intervene button next to their names, you can influence their karma levels effectively.
Intervention allows you to scold Zois in the “terrible”range, shifting their karma meter to the non-critical “bad”range. This action grants them an opportunity to adjust their behavior within the following day.

Conversely, for Zois displaying “best”karma, the intervention involves praise. While the specific effects of this mechanism are still unclear, it has been observed that praise may not definitively maintain a Zoi’s high karma level from one report to the next.
Embrace Rotational Gameplay for Fine-Tuning
By employing a rotational play style, you can oversee problematic households actively, adjusting their karma as needed. This offers an engaging challenge but might distract from playing your personal Zoi if you prefer not to manage randomly generated ones.
Notably, the households you aren’t controlling are likely regressing in karma, requiring you to focus on remedial measures rather than proactive solutions.
Adjust the Control City Status for Long-Term Management
On a positive note, while outright cheating to adjust karma is presently unavailable, the game features certain settings that allow for gradual adjustments over time. Access these by navigating to Manage Zois > Manage City from the City Map menu.
Here, you’ll find sliders that modify gameplay parameters, including a karma control featured in the Control City Status options. By default, all sliders are set to “normal, ”but they can be tweaked to foster the gameplay experience you desire.

Among the various sliders available is the option for “Conversation Karma Positivity.”Raising the positive karma slider to the highest level and lowering the negative karma slider can promote more socially responsible behavior among your Zois.
However, changes made through the Control City Status menu will not yield immediate results and will occur progressively over time. The timeframe for these changes remains unclear, leading to some player uncertainty regarding their effectiveness.
You can also adjust your population slider from this screen to manage the number of Zois more effectively. If you decide to simplify your city management, lowering this option may help reduce the number of characters to oversee simultaneously.
