Microsoft Configuration Manager to Transition to Annual Release Cycle
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape of endpoint management, Microsoft Intune has become the preferred solution for numerous organizations, primarily due to its cloud-based architecture. Nevertheless, Microsoft Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) remains a vital tool for organizations that favor on-premises management solutions. Since its original launch as Systems Management Server (SMS) in 1994, ConfigMgr has undergone significant changes, including rebranding and strategic updates. Recently, Microsoft has unveiled a pivotal shift in its strategy regarding this well-established tool.
Shift to Annual Release Cycle
According to a recent blog post by Microsoft, Configuration Manager is set to transition to an annual release cycle starting next year, moving away from its current biannual release schedule. This upcoming change has already been discussed at various events and in communications with partners, making this announcement more of a formalization rather than a surprise for the user community.
Microsoft’s Vision for Device Management
Microsoft has stressed that Intune represents the “future of device management.”Consequently, they encourage customers seeking cutting-edge innovations to consider migrating to Intune. For those who prefer to stick with Configuration Manager, Microsoft reassures them that it remains a robust option for on-premises management focused on stability, security, and long-term support. The new annual release cadence is expected to aid customers in planning their upgrades more efficiently, allowing them to prioritize stability while gradually strategizing their transition to Intune.
Upcoming Releases and Support Details
Beginning with version 2609 in September 2026, Configuration Manager will officially implement its annual release cycle. Meanwhile, Microsoft has outlined a roadmap for upcoming releases:
- 2509 (December 2025): Focused on stability and quality improvements, including support for ARM64 architecture.
- 2603 (March 2026): Enhancements in security in line with the Microsoft Secure Future Initiative.
- 2609 (September 2026): Marks the first release under the new annual cadence.
- 2709 (September 2027): A future-oriented release with details yet to be clarified.
Each annual release of Configuration Manager will be supported for 18 months, although hotfixes or out-of-band updates will only be issued when deemed absolutely necessary. While Microsoft’s focus clearly leans towards promoting Intune, this strategic evolution is not surprising. The company remains committed to supporting Configuration Manager deployments well into the future.
