Major Update for Google Maps on Android Auto for Ford EVs

This year, Google and Ford kicked off a significant multi-year partnership. As part of this alliance, a substantial update for Android Auto is being introduced, particularly benefiting Ford’s electric vehicles by enhancing navigation and simplifying the process of finding charging stations. Ford’s Product Manager, Anthony Phillips, shared details about the update in a post on LinkedIn, highlighting the new features set to be implemented in Ford’s EV lineup.

At present, the updated Android Auto experience is exclusively available for drivers of the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. Those who own these Ford electric vehicles will now enjoy features that help locate nearby charging spots as well as monitor battery status using Google Maps integrated into Android Auto.

A standout feature in the enhanced Google Maps on Android Auto is the ability to showcase the estimated remaining battery levels upon reaching a chosen destination. Users can select their endpoint, and Google Maps will inform them of the expected battery level upon arrival. This exciting feature was previously only available in vehicles equipped with the built-in Android Automotive system, but it is now rolling out for both Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning models. It was initially teased back in January during CES 2024.

In addition, the update allows users of Android Auto to view compatible Tesla Supercharger locations. Anthony stated in his LinkedIn update, “The feature also enables Android Auto users to find Tesla Supercharger stations that can be accessed with an adapter while driving a Ford electric vehicle and utilizing Google Maps. This involves automatic battery preparation when heading to a DC fast charger and visualizing available charging options along the journey.”

Apart from navigation enhancements, Ford’s electric vehicles will benefit from an update aimed at optimizing battery performance while traveling to charging stations. This update also introduces improved visibility of amenities at charging locations and recommends a “minimum charge”necessary for reaching specific destinations using Google Maps.

Owners of the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning should ensure they download the latest software update on their infotainment systems and upgrade their Android Auto application to fully enjoy the new features.
