What’s New in World Update 20?

Dubbed one of the biggest updates yet for Flight Simulator, this release significantly enhances the visual fidelity of major Japanese cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Collaborating with Bing Maps, Gaya, and Asobo, Microsoft has utilized advanced technologies like photogrammetry and triangulated irregular network (TIN) surface texturing to transform 23 highlighted regions across Japan.

New Points of Interest and Handcrafted Airports

Alongside the graphical upgrades, players can now explore 67 new points of interest throughout Japan. These include notable attractions such as:

  • Osaka Castle
  • Akinada Bridge
  • Shosanbetsu Observatory
  • Enoshima Sea Candle
  • Fukuoka Tower

Moreover, the update introduces five meticulously crafted airports in the region:

  • Hokkaido Spaceport (JP-0052): Situated near Taiki Town, this facility features a single asphalt runway and supports various aerospace endeavors.
  • Kitakyushu Airport (RJFR): Built on an artificial island in the Seto Island Sea, this airport operates around the clock with a single asphalt/concrete runway.
  • Rishiri Airport (RJER): Located on the volcanic island of Rishiri, this small airport has one asphalt runway.
  • Sado Airport (RJSD): Found on Sado Island, this airport also comprises a single asphalt runway.
  • Satsuma Iōjima Airport (RJX7): A private airfield in Mishima village, featuring one asphalt runway.

Additional Features for an Immersive Experience

In addition to the extensive visual and textural upgrades, World Update 20 includes three discovery flights, three unique landing challenges, one bush trip, and a spotlight event. These activities provide players with exciting opportunities to explore Japan’s landmarks through curated missions.

Availability and Future Prospects

World Update 20 is now available for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and the previous versions, offered as a complimentary download. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the latest installment is set to launch on Sony’s PlayStation 5 platform soon, expanding its reach to a wider audience.
