“Major Concern: Rihanna Pays Taxes but Lacks Voting Rights”—Fans React to Her Response on US Residency Query
Rihanna Voices Political Support Ahead of Election Day
On November 5, 2024, as the United States prepares for its elections, international music icon Rihanna took to Instagram the day prior to express her political support. Although not a U.S. citizen herself, the Barbados-born singer announced that, if she could vote, she would choose Kamala Harris, using the hashtag #VoteCauseICan’t.
In her Instagram video, which shows her gazing out of a car’s window, she humorously captioned it:
“Pov: Me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport.”
This lighthearted approach to a serious issue was met with curiosity. A follower in the comments section questioned how Rihanna could live in the U.S. without citizenship. In her characteristic witty style, Rihanna responded:
“Taxes, dummy!”
Social Media Reactions: A Divided Perspective
Rihanna’s candid replies quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking lively discussions among her followers. An Instagram account, @TheShadeRoom, shared the exchange, drawing additional commentary, including one user who pointed out:
“The bigger issue is she paid taxes but can’t vote.”
Some fans praised Rihanna’s commitment to civic engagement, while others felt her critics were overly vocal:
Rihanna’s Background and Commitment to Civic Engagement
Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in February 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna has roots in both Afro-Guyanese and Barbadian heritage. After moving to the States, she quickly made her mark on the music industry, famously auditioning for Def Jam in New York City in 2005.
This latest post on voting isn’t Rihanna’s first call to action. Back in November 2018, she endorsed voting by reposting a message originally from activist Shaun King, urging her followers to participate in the electoral process:
“It’s Election Day, America!! The most important day for the rest of your lives… all you have is right now! TODAY!! If you’re tired of complaining about the state of the country and government, get up and do something about it.”
Rihanna’s Multifaceted Career
While Rihanna has not released an album since 2016’s Anti, she remains a powerful figure in the beauty industry through her brands, including Fenty Beauty, which debuted in 2017, and Savage X Fenty lingerie, launched in 2018. More recently, she expanded her brand repertoire with Fenty Skin in July 2020 and Fenty Hair in June 2024.
Her extensive catalog includes timeless hits such as Umbrella, Don’t Stop the Music, and I Hate That I Love You. Through her social media presence and brand initiatives, Rihanna continues to influence and engage with her audience beyond music.
