Mafia: The Old Country Gameplay Reveal at The Game Awards
In a much-anticipated unveiling, 2K and Hangar 13 showcased the first gameplay for their upcoming title, Mafia: The Old Country, during The Game Awards. Despite a previous leak dampening some suspense, the trailer—available above—reveals a gripping prequel that immerses players in the Mafia universe, specifically in the gritty ambiance of early 1900s Sicily.
A New Narrative Direction
Breaking away from the franchise’s traditional open-world approach, Mafia: The Old Country will offer a linear narrative experience centered on an original protagonist named Enzo. While fans had speculated about the return of classic characters in youthful iterations, Hangar 13 has confirmed that Enzo is a new addition to the series.
Enzo’s Unfolding Story
Hangar 13 elaborated on Enzo’s character and the historical context that shapes his story:
Enzo’s story unfolds in a time when skill with a stiletto blade was a deadly asset, a lupara sawed-off shotgun was a go-to firearm, murderous vendettas raged for decades, and mafiosi patrolled their protection rackets on foot, horseback, or behind the wheel of turn-of-the-century motorcars.
Through grit and determination, Enzo has survived a childhood of indentured labor in Sicily’s hellish sulfur mines. Now, through a twist of fate, he has the opportunity to join Don Torrisi’s crime family, and will do whatever it takes to carve out a better life for himself.
A Commitment to Authentic Storytelling
Nick Baynes, president of Hangar 13, described Mafia: The Old Country as a tribute to the classic, gritty tales of organized crime. “Mafia: The Old Country is a love letter to old-style, gritty Mafia stories where players can uncover the origins of organized crime,” he stated. “Everyone at Hangar 13 is committed to creating the most authentic and intense story of the franchise, and we can’t wait for players to experience the journey with Enzo.”
Release Information
Mafia: The Old Country is slated for release in Summer 2025 and will be available on multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
