Mafia: The Old Country leverages Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, transitioning away from the engine utilized in Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition. Although some players have expressed concerns about potential stuttering, particularly given the game’s departure from the open-world format of earlier titles in the series, Hangar 13 is emphasizing a linear, narrative-driven approach. According to studio president Nick Baynes:

Mafia: The Old Country is a focused, linear experience that combines quality storytelling, authentic era immersion and a refined take on the familiar Mafia gameplay. That focus allows us to deliver a story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal and emotional. Embracing early 1900s era Sicily, this is a mafia origin story that follows our protagonist, Enzo Favara, as he takes the oath and works his way up Don Torrisi’s crime family.

This decision to create a more linear experience could mitigate stuttering issues that have plagued other titles, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, especially since there is no vast world to stream. However, definitive conclusions about performance will have to wait until the game officially launches on August 8.

Additionally, for players whose systems may not meet the specified requirements, Mafia: The Old Country will be available for streaming on NVIDIA GeForce NOW from day one. This option provides greater accessibility for gamers eager to dive into the Mafia universe.
